Help with Germany / Switzerland itinerary

Jump to last reply

I'm planning a two week trip for myself, husband and two sons (19 and 25) in June. So far the plan is to spend the first 9 nights split between Germany and Switzerland. Then spend the second week (7 nights) in Paris where we plan on staying in an apartment and will be joined by our third son (27) and his girlfriend.

I'm having trouble deciding on an itinerary for the Germany/Switzerland part of the trip. We like small villages, historical sights, and people watching in cafes and pubs. We also like day hikes and bike riding around town if not on busy roads.

There are good fares flying in to Frankfurt arriving at 1:00. If i had more time (sigh) I'm thinking I'd like to do something like this:

Rent a car and drive to Rothenberg for one night.

Second day drive the Romantic Road to Munich (3 or 4 nights). Explore the town square, visit beer halls, maybe do a bike ride around town to the English Gardens, and take day trips to Salzburg and the Dachau Concentration Camp.

Drive to Fussen or Oberammergau (2 nights) to visit the castles then travel to Grindelwald, Switzerland for 3 or 4 nights to enjoy the Alps.

I'm having trouble condensing this down 9 nights, which is really only 8 days, and I don't want to make the mistake of spending too much time travelling between everything we want to see.

Since there are 4 of us, it seems economical to hire a car and then drop it and pick up a train near the Switzerland border. The train from Fussen to Interlaken, however, is 8 hours from what I can tell, which is a concern, and I'm wondering where is the best place to drop the car/pick up the train.

Also, I haven't figured out a good way to get from Grindelwald to Paris other than taking a 4 hour train to Zurich and then flying to Paris.

There's so much to see and so little time! This is our second trip to Europe but the first that has needed much planning; the first was a tour to Italy in 2010. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
