Help with German Hotels for Oct trip
 

I am going to Germany the end of October with my husband and our two kids (age 18 & 20 hardly count as kids anymore). We will spend 2 nights in Munick at the begining and one night at the end prior to flying out. I am looking for a hotel there where we can get to the Marienplatz easily as well as back out to the airport at the end of the trip (could be two different hotels). I am confused about what they call the subway but I figured if we have access to it we would be in good shape. I am looking to get 2 rooms for less that $100 each if possible. Priorities are to get as nice a room as possible (good beds for sore backs), access to the subway, breakfast included maybe, parking for our rental car. Any suggestions?

If you are flying into Munich, I suggest you don't pick up your car until you are actually ready to leave Munich. Driving in Munich and parking will be a hassle and once there you will be able to get around easily with public transport.

Many people here recommend the Hotel Uhland. Go to the search box and put in MunicH Hotels for lots of information.

Is that $100 per room, or in total?

If the first, it's possible bidding on Priceline might be a good option, because many times 4* hotels are obtainable in the range of $60 USD + taxes and fees. I'm not sure how well-located they are, being unfamiliar with Munich. But look at www.betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com .

Thanks for your help. Yes I did plan on $100 for each room. I am searching for Munich hotels so will see how it all works out. Priceline worries me because I don't think I can specify the things that are important like access to the subway, parking, breakfast incl. etc. Let me know if you recommend and specific hotels. Hi - my husband and I were in Germany this past May with our 15 and 18 year old sons. In Munich we stayed at the Exquisit hotel. It is one train stop from the Marienplatz- or you could walk it. It was also right next to a food- especially seafood market. It was a very nice hotel in a qiuet neighborhood. We got 2 adjoining rooms in the annex building (room 311 I think)- which adjoins the main hoetel by a lovely courtyard. The rooms were very large, both with a nice bathroom. The breakfast was great and very large. The rooms were 100 euro each and we thought well worth it for the price and location. We took the train from the airport to the hotel- it took about 40 min and we needed to change trains I think once. We spent a total of 9 days in germany with the boys and have many more suggestions if you need.

To find out which Munich hotels Priceline uses and winning bid prices, go to www.biddingfortravel.com and go to the Germany section. In June, for example, a person got the Munich Marriott Courtyard (2*) for $55/nt plus taxes and fees. Often, this does not include breakfast.

An inexpensive hotel near the train station is the Hotel Eder. This gets good reviews in TripAdvisor.com and is around 80E/nt for a double with breakfast. It is less than two blocks from the train/Ubahn station. Not sure it has parking though. Then again, save yourself the hassle and don't pick up the car until you are leaving Munich and drop it off before going to your hotel for the final night.

www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html offers doubles for about 80E w/bkfst. It is about 12 min walk from the train station and about 20 min from the Marienplatz.

It is right near the Oktoberfest venue, and has parking.

However, if you are going during Octoberfest, you will find it very hard to get a room in Munich.

Think of the S-bahn and Ubahn as local trains.

The subway and train system seemed confusing to me at first too, but once I got there, it was really easy.

The S-bahn is a city train that is above ground except through the center of Munich, where it goes under. There are several lines, 2 of which go to the airport, all of which go through the city center.

The U-bahn is the subway - it is always underground. Through the city center, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn share stations, with the U-Bahn being 1 level below the S-Bahn.

If you choose a hotel close to an S-Bahn or U-Bahn station, it will be fine. Check out the link below for everything you ever wanted to know about Munich public transportation :)

We liked the Hotel Blauer Bock near the Viktualien Markt and Marienplatz. It is also near an SBahn stop for connection to the airport:

The last two years we have stayed our last night in Germany in Freising, near the airport with a dedicated shuttle bus from the train station to the airport. Taxi to the airport is about 15 minutes and 20 euros. It is a small Bavarian town with its own sights but away from the maddening crowd. We liked the Hotel zur Gred:

Thank you everyone for your replies and help. I am still learning about this website and lost my message for the last 10 days so sorry not to get back and thank you sooner. I am still working on my hotel in Munich, every time I make a decision and go to book, the hotel seems not to be available. Frustrating but I'm sure I will figure it out eventually.

Check www.hrs.de for your hotel reservations.
On the start page you can set language to English US.
After you selected the dates of your stay, the hotel list will only show available rooms.
Sort the list by "Distance to" and opt for "Munich-Centrum".
The first couple 2-3 dozen hotels should be in the very central area of Munich.
If you find one that suits your taste (and wallet), click on its name, and you get detailed information on that hotel in a pop-up window. When you check "Map/distance" it also states the distance to next subway or S-Bahn station.

We always stay at the Hotel Concorde. It is a great location...very close to the train to the airport too. Right down the block is where Mike's bike trip starts which is very fun to do. It is a few blocks from the Marienplatz and has breakfast.

If you are still having trouble finding a hotel perhaps I can help. Whenever I stay in the Munich area, I stay at a hotel in the eastern suburb of Poing. It is a few minutes walk to the S-bahn station, from which Marienplatz is 25 minutes away. By S-bahn, the airport takes a little longer, about 55 minutes with a 13 minute change at to the S-8 at Leuchtenbergring. However, if you do have a car, there is plenty of parking at the hotel. A room with a double bed is €80; with 2 singles it's €74. It is a very nice family run hotel in a quiet area, BUT, I have never heard a word of English spoken there, so if you can't speak at least basic German, I don't think it would work.

I am staying at that hotel in Poing for two nights middle of October. And per your other requirement, the room does come with a typical German "reichhaltiges" breakfast buffet.

In Munich we have always stayed at Hotel Schlicker. About 100 yards from the Rathaus and Marienplatz on Tal Strasse, next to the Vicktualienmarkt. Parking available. Clean and friendly. You might want to check their web site.
