Hello!
Thanks for asking...
Well, what we were able to do was to confirm one place as a definite on the shortlist, that is Tours and the area surrounding it.
We also visited a number of new areas some of which gave us a couple of places that MIGHT get added to the shortlist and some we were able to rule out. For example we loved Dijon more than we expected but, although we liked Beaune very much from visitor point of view, we didn't rate is as a potential palce to live.
We were able to add Lyon to our itinerary and although we both really liked it we decided it's just too large a city to allow us to easily live in the countryside outside whilst still being not too long a drive into the city centre. It's also that touch too far South for us.
What we think we'll do next is do the same kind of top level overview visit to another couple of regions (Western Loire, more of the Creuse, and a little to the West of that).
We'll hope to end up with a shortlist of about 6. We'll then visit each of these for a week each, to properly assess them as this trip we just did touristy visits.
Then we'll narrow down to one or two and do longer stays before deciding.
And THEN we can start looking for houses!!!!

PS We didn't get as far West as Nantes, hence why that area is on the list to explore next time.
Trouble is we have three trips already booked next year that total 8 weeks already. Actually, 4 trips if I include a week in UK with friends that we always do (and are booked to do) once a year. So that's 9 weeks already booked.
So I think the next France trip will be 2009 though we may be able to do 2 or 3 trips in that year.

Tell me about it! And my wishlist is ever growing too!
Next year we're returning to Islay for the whisky festival which coincides with Pete's birthday. We first went in 2006, also for the festival, and loved it so this I have rented a larger self-catering place and we're taking friends.
That's at the end of May and Sheila will be there at same time so we'll be able to catch up with her too.
In August/ September we've got 3 weeks luxury safari in Kenya and Tanzania. Can't WAIT!
And THEN, recently we impulse booked a return trip to Antarctica for November/ December. It's a similar itinerary to our last trip (in 2004) BUT with 4 whole days in South Georgia which was the highlight of our last trip! It's a photographic special and is on the sister ship to the one we were on last time. All good!
Do NOT even ask me about finances. I think my financial adviser is going to KILL me.
