you should also take into account that if it has a view of the Duomo, chances are that it's up the hill that overlooks florence to the south. that's ok walking down into the town, but could be a pain walking back up. also you will be reluctant to return to the apartment in the day if it's too far out.

really, considering that there are 6 of you, you can easily 'soak up" the extra $800 between you. the ponte vecchio apartment sounded idea for you for a first visit - I'd much prefer that to one stuck up on the hillside, view or no view.

Normally we would split it between the couples/singles going, but we are treating some of the party to the apartment. (employee appreciation/incentive) We are by no means rolling in the dough though and did have to scale a few things down. That is why I looked for another apartment. Especially when I found out how much some of the tours will be that I think we would all really enjoy.

Says the apartment is located on Via Toscanella, in the "heart of the oltramo zone, close to the famous Palazzo Pitti and Via Maggio." The reviews all had 5 stars and it seemed almost everyone commented how walkable it was to major sites. No one mentioned hills or such, but I am sure it won't be flat. I am not expecting a true Duomo view, just was using it as a general reference point. But after I posted that it occured to me it must be seen from many parts of city wide and far and that was probably clear as mud.

I am not scared of a small hike. I like the idea of getting the true feel of a residential area. My husband and I are super weird and plan most of our vacations around marathons we compete in. But for the rest of the group, they seem healthy enough, no issues---yet I have never been to Italy before and I am anxiously awaiting more comments on this particular area from the panel of experts. :-) I certainly don't want to make a major mistake.

No, this is a good location, really not far from the Ponte Vecchio where you said the first apartment is. They're using the Via Maggio reference because it leads to the other main bridge you're likely to use -- Ponte Santa Trinita... and then directly to the Ferragamo store!!

The location is good. What floor is the apartment on? Is there an elevator? Do you have websites of the apartment choices to share with us?

3rd floor, there is a lift! Wow I will be spoiled. Found it on Homeaway.com.

near the pitti palace should be ok, not too much walking to get to the centre and an interesting area to stay in with lots of "local" shops and restaurants to explore.
