Help with Extra Day after Munich

We have an extra day between Munich and our flight out of Frankfurt. We will have seen the Mosel/ Rhine, Rothenburg ODT, much of Bavaria, Munich, and the Dolomites. I am thinking of spending a night in Wurzburg, but I am certainly open to suggestions. At this point, we will have dropped off our car (when we arrive in Munich)... I would love your ideas!

I never have been in Germany, but if I have understood your post..you leave your car in Munich, next day is free and the next you fly home from Frankfurt. It seems a bit of rushing to me. I would travel to Frankfurt that free day and would rest a bit in Frankfurt before the flight, sure, I get tired too easily !! :))

kemderina, Frankfurt really does not look appealing to us. I am sure there are those that might appreciate it, but it looks like another large city to us, and given the closeness of some of the smaller towns to Frankfurt, we thought we would spend the evening and next day in that town, and then spend the night before we fly out near the airport in Frankfurt. Of course, I could be persuaded to stay in Frankfurt, if I am convinced it is worth seeing.

Wurzburg is certainly an option, but maybe you might consider a smaller town near Wurzburg -- Wertheim. We are planning to visit there in May but from what I've read, it is a lovely town and just the right size to see in a day.

Otherwise, consider Iphofen, also near Wurzburg.

Have you been to Iphofen? Staying in a small town is certainly appealing to us...but are they both easily accessible by train?

I searched for this page for a friend a few months ago, maybe it's useful for you. It's about Frankfurt and its surroundings and has a lot of links.
I forgot to post it before :)

wren, yes, I believe there is train service to Iphofen. I think you can look on their website for Tourist Information and then under Anreise. It certainly looks like they are serviced by train.

It's a wonderful little wine town. We stayed there for 2 nights in May 05. On their website, look under Zimmernachweis. We stayed at the Zum Hirschen which I can highly recommend. It's a 3* gasthof with large, clean rooms and a good breakfast at a great price. Can't beat the location either.

Sorry, Wertheim is also serviced by train according to the www.bahn.de website. From Munich, it looks like a 3-1/2 hr to 4+ Hr journey. Iphofen is about 3 hrs journey from Munich.

Thanks, Kenerina for the site..I will check it out.
Betty, those towns sounds interesting. It looks like they are easily accessible by train (since we will have given up the car) from Munich and then to the Frankfurt airport. One of those two small towns might be just perfect after the bustle of Munich and before a long flight home. Do you have any more info that might sway us toward one of the towns? According to bahn.de travel time to the airport is about the same.

Wren, since I haven't yet been to Wertheim, I can only go by what I've picked up from various websites:

Iphofen, was recommended years ago by Travels with Ed and Julie. It is a moated village surrounded by medieval walls about 45 minutes from Wurzburg considered by many to equal Rothenberg in charm – but it's a smaller, and a less touristy spot. We kind of just took a leap of faith and loved everything about the town. There are several winemakers in town and the Knauf museum (which we didn't visit). Some, but not a lot of shopping, and several good restaurants.

You can check out my husbands pictures of Iphofen by doing a search on webshots for "dkubiak iphofen". Also, you can do a search here on Fodor's for Iphofen and find my trip report and hotel reviews.

While Wertheim looks a somewhat larger than Iphofen, I think you'd probably be very happy with either one.
