Sorry this post is late but we did end up staying in the Copehagen Marriot on concierge floor. The four of us in one room. It was adequate size and the beds were very comfortable. The lounge was great and I would highly recommend upgrading to the executive floors. Breakfast was nice with lox, scrambled eggs bacon juice and fresh fruit. The evening drinks were nice and the appetizers while not great were nice to enjoy. The hotel was a little off center but we walked everywhere. I am pretty picky with hotels but this was a nice value and would highly recommend it. It looked much nicer then many of the other places we were thinking about staying in. It was very cold so in the warmer months the walk would be even less of a problem.
In Copenhagen we went to the Carlsberg glyptotec, national museum, and Ripley museum (for our kids who loved it), train to kronenborg castle and then ferry to Helsignor(sp). Not much to see in Sweden but our kids wanted to see another country so a nice little side trip. Unfortunately the Tivoli was closed but still found plenty of things to do. We then rented a car to go to Vejle and stopped in Odense to see the Han Christian Anderson museum. It was a fun stop however the weather turned very cold and snowy. From Odense we went to my wife's meeting in Vejle. The trip was rough because of the snow and ice on the roads. On our way back from Vejle the main bridge was closed for more then a day and we were forced to spend 24 hours in our car as there was no way to get back to Copenhagen. We missed our flight and had a real mess getting home. I would highly recommend taking the train for this trip if you go there in the winter. Otherwise the drive was real easy but car rental was expensive (about 125 per day). We didn't get to see Vejle much because of the weather we left early to try and get back to copenhagen but in the end that did not work out because of the bridge closure. The people in Denmark were very nice and overall a great trip until we got stuck in our car with the ice. David |
The train from Copenhagen to Vejli takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. You can get back to the airport on the same train; some change in Copenhagen and some are direct. You can see the schedules on the German train site, www.bahn.de (there is undoubtedly a Danish one too but I just always use this one). This would be much simpler, especially with the kids, than dealing with a rental car, returning it, etc. Copenhagen itself is a very enjoyable city for walking, with a long pedestrian zone.
I think your kids would really enjoy the Viking ship museum at Roskilde---a 30-minute train ride from Copenhagen (Norreport station). They will also enjoy walking up the Round Tower and, as alreay noted, the amazing spiral staircase on Our Savior's Church. Most Danes speak very good English, and your children will enjoy talking with them. Take lots of money---food and drink are very expensive! But it's worth it---Copenhagen is a wonderful city. |
Sonora Pass - You gave some great info and insights until you started to insert your political beliefs. And in that case you were way off base. I never had ANY Dane give me problems about our President or country. A couple jokes here and there, but never ever has a Dane gotten angry with me discussing politics. As far as your socialist comments, I have not found that Dane yet that hasn't whined about how high his taxes are. You're right, they are happy, contented people, so much so that they aren't in the habit of sticking their noses into my country's business.
