Help with day trips from Florence!

We are going to be in Florence for 3 1/2 days and we will not have a car.

1 day we plan to take the bus to Siena

Where else should we go that is within 1-2 hours of Florence that is accessible by train.

My thoughts are Lucca or Orvieto? I see that these two come up a lot on these boards.

We are traveling with our 4 year old and are just looking to soak up as much of Italy as possible with cool piazzas and less museum type stuff.

Thanks!!!

Bp - Siena and Orvieto are good choices.

If you choose Lucca I would combine it with Pisa.

Hope this helps ...

Are there any other towns that are a must see in this vicinity that I am missing? Thanks for any input!

San Gimignano is worth a visit, especially in the late afternoon when the crowds thin out. It's about an hour, hour and a half from Florence, and my kids loved it!

I loved San Gimignano, but is awfully hilly. They have a museum there of ancient torture that was an eyeopener--who would have thought. Lucca has a nice wall around the city that you can walk. Orvieto is smaller and maybe more doable with a child. marilynh

Hi bp,

>We are going to be in Florence for 3 1/2 days ...<

One day to Siena - 2 1/2 days.

Aren't you going to spend any time in Florence?

You might find the Florence part of my trip report helpful.

Ira is correct. You are going to need time to see Florence. But a good 1/2 day trip is to take the bus to Fiesole. Visit the San Francesco Monastary and the Tuscan ruins. Then have lunch overlooking Tuscany and back to Florence. You can take the bus to Piazza San Marco and start there.

Yes, we do plan to spend a good day or so and the evenings wandering around Florence (my husband and I) have been there once before.

Thanks for all the advice!
