Route 1 is far too much for a day trip.
Either go to Montserrat, or to Girona/Figueras/Cadaquès and back. (If you drive back along the coastline, it will be a long day).

Apart from the Dali Museum there is a huge market in Figueras on Thurs. morning that your daughter might enjoy.

In Salou there is a theme park called Port Aventura which she (and you) will probably enjoy. I took my son when he was 15 and expected the worst. I ended up being pleasantly surprised.

Cardona is fine if you spend the night at the parador and visit the salt mine but it is a very small town.

When are you going? We are taking our teens to Barcelona the second week of March. I've planned to definitely go to Montserrat and maybe add Figueres and Girona, if we want to get out of town again. If you can wait a few weeks, I'll let you know how they went and how the kids liked them.

My husband and I just returned yesterday from a week in Barcelona and loved it. We did 1 day trip to Montserrat and loved it, especially the hiking. I think that would be a good day trip by itself and not going to the other cities. I don't know about the other cities so I can't comment too much. Someone did recomment Sitges which is a beach town near by.

Sounds like you might know Barcelona, but just in case, there is a whole lot more to do than just architecture and art. We loved renting bikes along the beach, walking on Las Ramblas and shopping down so many of the side streets and then spending 1/2 a day at Park Guell walking around and relaxing on the benches.

Hope this helps and let me know if you need any recommendations for restaurants.

Spent a month in the area with our boys.

We visited Girona and Figueras on separate day trips (from a rented villa). The two together might be too much for a single day.

Also spent a week in Cadaques, which was wonderful, but might be too far and too windy a road for a day trip.

Of the places you mentioned, the Dali museum in Figueras is the "must-see" and would please your husband and daughter. But your daughter would also love Gala's castle, which you could visit on the same day as Girona, with a stop on the coast for lunch.

From our villa we also took day trips to Besalu (incredible preserved medievil town), Olot (volcanic hike), and several places over the French border.
