Help with Bavarian Itinerary
In October we are driving from Munich to southern Bavaria spending two nights in either Mittenwald or Berchtesgaden. I'm having a tough time choosing which area to go to, and I'm looking for some help choosing.
I'v already been to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. My first itinerary is: -Linderhof -Oberammergau and Garmisch -Cog wheel train up the Zugspitze -Hike the Partnachklamm -Two nights in Mittenwald My second itinerary is: -Herrenchiemsee -Cog wheel train up the Wendelstein -Boat ride on Konigsee (In October?) -Obersalzberg, bunkers -Eagles nest -Two nights in Berchtesgaden Thanks in advance for the help. |
second itinerary - Berchtesgaden!
No doubt in my mind - although I question your idea of Herrenchiemsee. I'd focus on the beauty of the mountains around Berchtesgaden. |
Agree with Tuck. I've been to both areas and my heart lies in the Berchtesgaden region.

If you decide on the Bertschesgaden option you will be very close (@15 miles) to Salzburg and that is a wonderful place to see.

Hi J,
I much preferred Linderhof to Herrenchiemsee. Don't forget the Wies Kirche near Oberammergau. There is a good chance of poor weather on the Konigsee in Oct. With only 2 nights, I would go with Plan 1. However, if -Obersalzberg, bunkers -Eagles nest are important to you.... ((I)) |
We were in Berchtesgaden for several days at the end of last September. We did the Eagle's Nest and the boat ride on Koenigsee. You can also take the cablecar up the Jenner Mtn. from Koenigsee.
http://www.jennerbahn.de/willkommen.asp We had some good and not so good weather during our 3 days. However, while the weather in Obersalzberg was dicey, the weather atop Kehlstein (Eagle's Nest) was perfect so you never know. We had not-so-perfect weather on the Konigssee in May a few years ago and still had a fantastic time. The pictures turned out pretty nice...very evocative. And the setting is so serene and beautiful that unless it's pouring outside I think it would be difficult not to be impressed.

Hi,
Very hard choice. We've been to both places twice the last 4 years in mid to late Oct. We love that time of year in Bavaria. I'd go with plan 2. I have to disagree about Herrenchiemsee. We saw it last year and it is our favorite of Ludwig's castles/palaces. Well worth the time. It's just a one hour drive from Berchtesgaden. Actually, it is on the way from Munich to Berchtesgaden.
