Help with Bavaria Itin - Family of Seven

Would love to get suggestions for itin for 5 days in Bavaria mid-June next year. Parents travelling with 3 kids - 14, 12 and 10 - as well as very active grandparents. We'd like to pick one place to stay and travel out for a few day trips. Definitely want to see Zugspitz, Eibsee, Garmisch (lived there in 1987 and want to show family the area), Neuschwanstein, Eagle's Nest. We'll be arriving via train from Prague and departing via train from Salzburg. We're interested in history - especially WWII, interesting small villages and a day or so hiking. I'd like advice on whether to get Bayern Pass or rental car ( knowing we'll have to get a mini-van type rental for all 7!) We don't want to spend all our time in a car/train travelling around - but do want to see as much as we can without exhaustion!! Also, if anyone has good recommendations for an apartment for 5 day stay - would love to hear it! Budget is tight - so would like to keep to max of 150Euros/night for all..thanks for any ideas/recommendations/thoughts!

any thoughts on 5-day itin for family in Bavaria? Ideas on best place to stay and travel out to hit key interests?

I would take public transportation just for the fact that with that many people you will need 2 cars and that will get pricey. Since your lodging budget is small, I am guessing your transportation budget isn't large either.

Hi VeeBee,

Would staying in Garmisch be too much repitition for you? I think this would be a great base, as you can get to all the places you want very easily by public transport. It's just not that convenient for seeing the Eagle's Nest though.

You probably remember that Garmisch has loads of small pensions or apartments that would fit.

Have fun!

yes, i'm thinking Garmisch but realize it's quite a distance from Eagle's Nest and didn't know if there was a more intermediate option. Also to Nov Moon - our transport budget is whatever it needs to be.. we don't want 2 cars so are trying to decide between a mini-van type vehicle that can fit 4 adults and 3 kids (i know -- very expensive in Europe) or public transport. Would having own transport be much more efficient in terms of time = getting from one place to another? anyone have experience here? also, any apartment type recommendations for 5 day stay in area? thanks much, veebe

Hi VB,

Half of what you want is about 3 hr by car from the other half.

Also, you want to come in by train from Prague - to where- and leave from Salzburg.

And you have only 5 nights.

I can highly recommend http://www.ammoos.at/main.php?language=en&m=home%29 in Salzburg for at least 2 nights.

For the other three, we found http://www.hotel-hechten.com/ in Fuessen very nice for visiting Neuchwanstein, Linderhof, the Wieskirche and Oberammergau.

You have one major problem---7 people.
There is no good way to transport that number. Even the vans will not hold 7 with luggage. That is your challenge

Hi again,

Well, using the trains has the additional, **wonderful** advantage of being cleaner for the environment. You would be helping to preserve the beautiful Bavarian Alps for the next generation.

I guess the best answer would be to split you trip into two parts. Stay in Garmisch and see all that is near here, then spent a night or two in Salzburg and see the Eagle's Nest from there.

Hope you find a good solution!
