Help with Amalfi Coast visit
 

My husband and I would like to visit the Amalfi Coast for about 3 nights before going to Rome, my question is if we fly into Naples where is the easiest location as far as transportation to stay for our visit. Is it Sorrento? Can you take a train from Naples airport to Sorrento? Private drivers are too expensive. How do people get there without renting a car or hiring private drivers.

I'm guessing that if we do stay in Sorrento it's easy to take the bus to visit Positano, Pompeii and ferry to Capri, or is it?

The is a commuter train that goes from Naples to Sorrento - some fokls don't like it as there may be pickpocets. But it works for me. You will just buy your ticket in the station and it takes maybe an hour down to Sorrento. And yes, from Sorrento it is easy to visit the other sights you mention.

There is a shuttle bus (Curreri) from the airport to Sorrento for 10€. Takes a little over an hour.

i stayed in Sorrento for a few days then at the glorious Capri Palace on Annacapris-great idea.I think the Blue Grotto is a waste. La Sinueuse is too out of the way to stay at but great for a drink.

Just to clarify things is the commuter train in the Naples airport or do we have to take a bus to a train station. I read on other sights that you have to take a bus to Napoli Centrale train station, after a long flight taking a bus, then train, sounds awful.

On the www.curreriviaggi.it it has shuttle for 80eur for 1 to 3 persons and the bus for 10 eur, what's the difference between the shuttle and the bus? Also, is it easy to find the bus station at the airport?

We hired a car at the airport but couldn't fit in 5 folk plus luggage so my bro, sister and her bf got the curreri coach to sorrento - it was their first time in Italy, they knew no Italian or had the slightest clue where they were going and if they managed it with no probs at all then that it must be very straightforward! They got the bus immediately outside arrivals - I dont think u can miss it. Def the best option for value and convenience.

There are two ways as stated. The direct bus to Sorrento from the airport or you take the airport shuttle to the Naples termini(5e)then buy a ticket on the train to Sorrento. If you have a lot of cases etc. the direct bus would save the hassle of dragging them around. Its your best bet.

Sorry, I have never flown into Naples - the commuter train is from Napoli Centrale - actually under that train station. Sounds like the bus from the airport to Sorrento is a winner, as long as it runs frequently.

We took the ferry from Naples to Sorrento. Very pleasant but certainly not the simplest way from the airport.

Sounds like taking the bus is our best option.

suze1 - The difference between the bus shuttle service and the other shuttle is you are hiring more of a private transfer. There is no commuter train (or any train) at the airport. You either have to take the shuttle bus to Sorrento (best option) or take a bus to the train station in Naples and then catch the train.

Taking the bus i your bet choice. From sorrento you can take the local train to Pompeii, a bus or ferry down the coast and a ferry or hydrofoil to Capri.

To return to Rome there is a bus directly from Sorrento or you can do the local train to Naples and an expresss Train to Rome.
