Help with a substitute for a recipe

I'm sending a recipe to my daughter for her favorite hot fudge sauce . The recipe calls for a tablespoon of Corn Starch (a thickener). What would this be called in a store,(El Corte), in Madrid? Does this product even exist in Spain? And if so, what is it called? What would be an equivalent ingredient? This product is sold in the baking aisles here in the states and is sold in a 16 oz. box. Thanks for any help.

It's called fécula de maíz.

The brand name would be MAIZENA, but it is ages since I have seen it.

She should be able to find it at any supermarket, such as Supersol or Alcampo or Mercadona.

You might even be able to find Arrowroot which can be used in place of cornstarch as a thickener.
I do not know if they have it there but it would be a substitute.

chestnut,
I know cornstarch as MAIZENA as well, and she can buy it at any supermarket of El Corte Inglés.

Many thanks to all who replied to my request regarding corn starch in Spain.
There will be a very happy transplanted Bostonian in Madrid tonight making some hot fudge sauce !!!!

Yes, Maizena is available in many supermarkets in Spain. Now, since that is resolved, how about sharing the recipe? I have friends in Spain who would dearly love to have such a treat.

Thanks in advance.

chestnut- did your daughter take cup and spoon measures with her? I forgot the first time I went over and my mom had to send them.

i, too, would like the recipe, or if someone knows how to substitute cornstarch(readily available) for corn syrup (the ingredient in my recipe).

thanks!

also, tell her if she wants to make chocolate chip cookies, the brown/yellow wrapped NESTLE DOLCA is the same chocolate used for chips in the USA. it is a large bar but you can cut it into gourmet type chips and it works great. (not found everywhere, but, you CAN find it)

also, tell her when making cookies to use a little extra flour or they will flatten.

best advice.. do not overcook.

Corn starch is NOT a substitute for corn syrup!
If it's a small amount of corn syrup, substitute with honey, which is a bit sweeter. If a large amount , dissolve 1 cup of sugar in 1/4 cup of water and boil until dissolved, then measure out desired quantity.

thanks for the tip. since this recipe has cornstarch and not corn syrup, like mine, i thought there was some magic substitution..
will try the suggestions.

hey.. i still would like the recipe when you get a chance!
