Help with 5-6 days in the Azores

Want to spend 5 or 6 days in the Azores. I can fly into either Terceira or Sao Miguel. My great grandparents are from the islands so I'm excited to go. I'm traveling alone so not sure about renting a car. I love the outdoors, history, nature and wine

Can you help with an itinerary for a solo traveler?

Thanks,
Lisa

Lisa, which island(s) is your family from ? They are ALL beautiful. Yes, you should rent a car. What do you need to know ?

They are from Terceira. I just wonder if it there is another way to see the island. I'm worried it might be tough to drive and navigate.

What islands would you see in 5 days and would you base out of one island?

Thanks

Terceira isn't difficult at all to drive on. It's very difficult to get lost and it's a small island with little traffic so you'll have no trouble with a hire car. We were there several years ago and island hopped across the central group, staying on Faial in Horta at the Pousada, then Terceira near to Angra and Sao Jorge. Graciosa was just a bit too far away for us.

You can do a circular drive round each island, but with only 5 days I'd stick to two. If Terceira is a given, then I'd see Sao Jorge as well, but it depends on where you fly in and out of.

When might you be going ? For a first time visit, I'd say go in summer, June thru August. The flowers are just spectacular. Fly into and base yourself on Terceira. You could spend all 5 days there. If you can get to Faial by ship, that would be fun. Also rent a car there and drive around the island. No matter which other island you visit, it will be wonderful.

Thanks so much for the info. I will be there in Sept. I'm OK to do what makes the most sense and could skip Terceira if I seeing Sao Miguel, Pico or Faial is more convenient.

Oh, I would go to Terceira. It is so much fun to see where your relatives are from and maybe find some more you didn't know you have !
