My husband and I and another couple want to take 2 days from our trip to Paris in October to visit the D day beaches in Normandy. We would like to take a tour, so any recommendations would be appreciated. And should we stay in Bayeux? We would like to avoid renting a car if possible. merci

We have done short side trips to Bayeux several times and really enjoy it. The one tour we did was with Allan Bryson, who when Battlebus Tours disbanded he started his own which can be found here http://firstnormandybattlefieldtours.com/19801.html. He was really good! I would do that for one full day, and then the other day do a half day trip to Mont St Michel. The Churchill Hotel in Bayeux runs a shuttle bus there, but you need to book in advance and their bus only holds 8 people, so book early. That still gives you time to see the tapestry and cathedral in Bayeux before heading back to Paris.

In Bayeux, we have stayed at both the Churchill Hotel and the Reine Mathilde Hotel. Both are great hotels (not luxury, but well kept and great staff).

We just returned from a trip to France that included a two
day stay in Bayeux. We took an all day tour with Overlord Tours. It left from Bayeux at 8:30 am and returned about 5 pm. We thought it was quite good. Our tour guide was Brigitte. We loved the Tapestry-get there early. Also, the Cathedral holds some interest.

We could not get reservations at the Churchill even months in advance. We booked the Castle, Noble Guest House through
Booking dot com. It was just about the only place left in
a decent location but we were very satisfied with the accomodation and breakfast. We walked there from the train station and it is very close to the place where the D-Day
tours leave from. Beware the shuttle from the Churchill to Mont St. Michel is quite expensive. It is probably worth it,
though, because you cannot rent a car in Bayeux, you must get
one in Caen. I don't know where you could park it in Bayeux.

I'd recommend staying at the Hotel d'Argouges in Bayeux--very near the cathedral, close walking distance to the Tapestry, great little bistros, and the pick up point for many D Day Tours. The hotel has beautiful common rooms and adequate sleeping rooms, very friendly family-owned hotel.
