The train station in Lyon might not seem very similar the savanna of Botswana or the Masai Mara, but appearances can be deceiving.)
DonTopaz I am glad to find they didn't steal your sense of humour.
And really, really glad that you weren't physically hurt during the incident. That is the most important thing, the next most important thing, and the next 1000 most important things after that.
I'm sure you will work out on your own what steps to take to minimize your risk in future. But the lesson I take from your experience is - let them take one's money if one must (e.g. as in a mugging situation) but really, really try to hang on to that passport. That you had official id seems to have been crucial to a quick resolution and a saving of your trip.
As I said on the other thread, have a great trip, and I expect a report!

bvlenci, I didn't use or take out my wallet in the station. My guess is they targeted the train (long-distance, so passengers more likely to have more cash, plus luggage) before targeting the individual.
