Help w/ Planning Four Days in Munich in November
I will be attending a conference in Bangkok in late October, and, on my way back, I plan to spend 4 days in Munich (after the Octoberfest). I am making the stopover both for rest and fun. I live in Brazil, and to get to Bangkok, I have to fly to Lisbon and from there to Munich to catch flights back and forth to Bangkok.
I have been looking through several travel sites and other discussion groups that refer to "what to do in Munich". But I still have a few questions, as follows:
a) What do you consider are the major "must do's" and "must see's" in relation to Munich?
b) What "day trips" to surrounding towns and places do you recommend?
c) Would a "day trip" to Salzburg be pushing too much for such a short stay in Munich?
I thank you in advance for your help. (BTW, I really enjoy this group, it is the best in terms of Travel Talk).

My Mom and I were in Munich for three days this past May. We saw the Frauenkirche, St. Michael's, Marienplatz and not much else as it was freezing cold and raining. We shopped a little but overall, we did not do justice to Munich. I hope other posters can come up with more suggestions for you.
That said, we did take a day trip to Salzburg/Lake District and it was so beautiful! We loved the scenery on the way. We used a Grey Line tour (41 € per person from our hotel, Le Meridien). The commentary from the tour guide was just "okay." I wouldn't discourage using Grey Line (maybe it was just a bad day) but would see if other tours are available. Or, if you're driving yourself - absolutely GO! Salzburg was beautiful. The Alps never fail to impress me and we especially liked St. Wolfgangsee. It was touristy but it did whet my appetite enough to want to go back and spend more time.

A "must" for me is a morning at the Victualienmarkt, near the Marienplatz. I love to wander around the market and stay for a lunch of wurst and bier under the trees. Sigh...wish I were there right now.

Remember Munich can be very cold in November. I did a day trip to Salzburg and it wasn't a bad train ride but from the time it took me to get there plus the return made me wonder if it was all worth it.
Munich actually has a lot to do such as museums, great shopping, the churchs, bavarian palaces and don't forget the beer halls!

I wrote this a long time ago and it need revision (quotes are still in Deutsch Marks), but it does list a lot of good Munich restaurants.
