Help w/ Budget Amsterdam Hotel
 

My husband and I will have one night in Amsterdam in August. Can anyone recommend a good budget hotel? Would like clean,friendly staff, and close to the city centre. Historic is always good too. Small and humble is OK. Just want to be able to do as much as possible in our day and a half. Please help. Not sure on prices, but would like to try to do under 80 Euro.

Any suggestions and or website info would be great!

Hotel Kap is a budget 3-star I have stayed at but I don't think it is quite that cheap.

Personally I wouldn't want to stay any place "humbler" than this.

Quite honestly I found the cheaper hotels in Amsterdam not a nice as similar priced ones in other cities. Especially since it's one night only, I would encourage you to raise your budget a bit if possible.

I started trying to look for reasonable accommodation in Amsterdam for a recent trip. In the end I used Priceline. For more information on using Priceline, see www.betterbidding.com or www.biddingfortravel.com.

I ended up staying at the Marriott and Renaissance (obviously not historic, small or humble though) for around $95 and $100 per night respectively. When I realised I could get something decent at that price, I was glad I gave up on the search for something budget. I had heard many a horror story about some of the mid-range hotels in Amsterdam. Having said that, it sounds like you have some great suggestions here to help avoid anywhere undesirable.

I think Priceline is an excellent suggestion. I have never used it myself (too scared) but Amsterdam is one city I would absolutely give it a try.

Try Hotel Residence le Coin. We paid 95 EU for a 'twin' last month (which is fine for a couple a the beds push together). Great location in the center of old Amsterdam, but not too close to tourist stuff. Right across the small street are two five-star hotels.

We loved Amsterdam! So beautiful, safe and friendly there.

Also try Hotel Hoksbergen..It is central on the Singel Canal..It is only a 1* but was only 90 Euro's when we stayed there a few years ago.It was nice, but a little too budget for me..But most of the people staying there were a little older and apparently stay there all of the time...

You can stay in a hotel ANYWHERE in the world...when in Amsterdam, especially when in Amsterdam on a BUDGET, stay in a BOAT !

I really like the looks of the Hotel Brouwer. Has anyone stayed there before? The price is right and it looks very Dutch and romantic.

I made a reservation for my father at the Hotel Brouwer a few months ago. His comments: "Room a bit small, not luxurious, but absolutely clean and acceptable, helpful staff, and a perfect location."

Brouwer is very popular, if you are interested I'd call to see about availability before you get your mind too set on it!

I emailed the Hotel Brouwer, but they were booked. I'll have to keep them in mind for the next time, as I always plan to come back. Anyone else with other suggestions? Just want something close to museums, etc. as we only have one day. If it's easy by tram, we don't mind taking the public transport. We'll be finishing our Netherlands trip in a more report area up North, so this will be our only city stay.
I'm uping my budget to 100 Euro or less for something nice, friendly staff, historic Dutch, really don't want modern. Something to remember, but not necessarily glamorous. Does that make sense?

Have you tried B&Bs? We saw some cute ones along the canals near the museum and Anne Frank house, but I didn't note their names.

The Hotel Residence le Coin is about a 15 minute walk to the Van Gogh museum, while the hotel itself is in a wonderful central location. It is made of 6 or 7 canal houses, refurbished and converted into the hotel. The outside is charming Dutch, the inside more homey/contemporary, if that makes sense. If I could stay at the Estherea for that cheap,that would be my first choice!!

I stayed at the Hotel Hegra on Singel canal in a pinch in 1997. The room was literally the last one in Amsterdam available that day; it was an 'attic' type of space on the top floor. Clean, acceptable, and a delicious, made-to-order breakfast for around $50 at that time. It was spartan, but I walk by the place fondly everytime I'm in Amsterdam. Not sure what the price is now, but it's certainly not a flophouse and I love the location.
