My favorite relatively low-cost hotel in Venice is Hotel Messner. It is on the "quiet side" of the Grand Canal (across from Piazza San marco). Check out http://www.familyhotels.com/Welcome/...ssner2.uk.html

A double room ran 200-250,000 lira. They have rooms with aircon. The breakfast terrace was nice. Bathrooms were pretty tiny, but the price and location (one Vaporetto stop from San Marco; very quiet neighborhood on a small canal) made up for that.
