HELP PLEASE - Trenitalia strike 23 June

We need to travel from Rome to Naples on 23rd June and I am wondering what to do about the scheduled train strike. Is the Eurostar included in the strike? Will the guaranteed "essential services" cover this route? Should I buy a ticket in advance or play it by ear? What to do?

qwovadis Jun 16th, 2011 02:12 AM

Has happened to me B4

Insuremytrip.com was a must for cancellation cover

Tigercarentals.com worked well for me 200 euros for an econo for the week

Always try to stay as flexible as possible buy tickets at station if they are running

Delays lots also so alternative transport was the key for me.

Good luck!

qwovadis, thanks for reply. I can't see us with a car in central Naples however, and there seem to be no buses on that route.

tarquin:

If you're looking for current information on travel-related strikes in Italy (or around the world, for that matter), go to www.easytravelreport.com

tarquin Jun 16th, 2011 04:17 AM

Thanks for those answers. Unfortunately the strike site has no new information since last week.

The bus looks like a possibility unless it counts as a "local" bus, which could also be on strike.

I was in Rome during a train strike a few years ago and needed to go to Sorrento. There were long distance buses from Rome Tibertina station. I'm sure that Rome to Naples counts as a long distance bus rather than a local city bus. As soon as you get to Rome go to Tibertina (or a travel agency) and buy bus tickets.

Here's a link to the link for the guaranteed trains:

I have pored fruitlessly over the Trenitalia site trying to work out what services are guaranteed. And, if guaranteed, will they be so packed that we cannot buy tickets or squeeze in?

The bus looks like a possible option, but I am not keen on suggesting it to my travel companion until it looks inevitable. Not everyone is as keen a traveller as I am.

The Trenitalia strike extends from 9PM on June 22 to 9PM on June 23. In addition, I've read that there will be local transportation strikes on June 23, which might mean almost anything . . . no local buses, trains, ferries.

Frankly, if I was confronted with this issue and really had to be in Naples on June 23, I would try to get to Naples before 9PM on June 22. I'm not sure what your plans are for Naples on June 23, but if indeed there is a local transport strike, those plans might be altered as well.

tarquin Jun 16th, 2011 07:41 AM

You might be right, ellenem, but I will delay because the hotels are not flexible. Fingers crossed.

Oh my gosh! I had no idea there was a scheduled strike and I land in Italy on the 22nd! I have already purchased tickets to get me from Milan to Florence on that day. Should I plan to take a bus instead? Will I get reimbursed for the ticket I have already purchased? This is awful!! =(

tarquin Jun 16th, 2011 08:31 AM

I think you should be all right on the 22nd if your arrival time is before 9pm.

I think you should be all right on the 22nd if your TRAIN TRIP is before 9pm.

I have booked a room in Rome for the night of the 23rd in case we don't make it, but hate to lose a (paid-for) night in Naples. Still keeping fingers crossed we will make it.

We are (were) planning to leave Parma June 23 via train to go to Modena.
Any suggestions? Hotels are booked.
Thank you for your help!

tarquin Jun 17th, 2011 06:17 AM

I think you will be able to go by bus - I understand that the local strikes last only a few hours, not the full 24.

Betts123 Jun 17th, 2011 09:31 AM

Shoot! June 23rd is the one day I really need public transportation! Need to catch a ferry from Capri to Naples and then the high speed train from Naples to Rome. Any idea if the ferries will be running? What is the best website to follow the official information? How can you track exactly which trains will be running as part of the skeleton service? Thanks!

tarquin Jun 17th, 2011 09:39 AM

Betts, links to the strike info site and the Trenitalia site have been provided above. I can't fathom from the train site exactly which services are guaranteed, but it looks like "essential" commuter trains, not the ones you and I are interested in.

But maybe the strike will not happen.

Betts123 Jun 17th, 2011 09:45 AM

Sorry, tarquin. With my frenzy I missed the link to the schedule within the link you provided. Looks like there is a train from Naples to Rome at 16:31 with a note that it could be pushed back ton 18:00. Certainly not ideal, but guess it will have to do. Fingers crossed the ferries are running! Would you suggest I buy tickets in advance (closer to the date in case the strike is moved or cancelled) to ensure we get tickets? I asumme there will be a lot of people trying to squeeze on train since it looks like only 3 trains will run.
