Help Please! Dad ill in Copenhagen, on my way there
Hello Fodorites,
I am asking for your help. My 89 year old Dad became ill right before getting on a cruise in Copenhagen. He has had 2 surgeries in 2 weeks and will be in the hospital for another 3-4 weeks. I am on my way there from the US. Does anyone know of a reasonable place to stay for a period this long, maybe a corporate apartment? He is at the Amager Hospital. Thank you! Marilyn from New Orleans |
I would contact the hospital patient services department - they probably have a list of places for patient's families to stay - or - if not - can put you in touch will someone who will have such a list.
And don;t worry - almost everyone in Denmark speaks perectly good English. And the medical care is excellent. |
You know what I'd do - I'd bid on priceline for a 4 or 5 night stay. Then when I was in Copenhagen I'd be able to talk to the hospital patient assistance staff or the tourist office to find a longer term place.
Good luck! |
hi Marilyn,
I don't have any advice, but just wanted to wish you godspeed on your voyage and prayers for your father's complete recuperation. BC |
Oh marilyn, you must be frantic. Could you, if you don't have a lot of time getting ready to leave, just reserve a hotel for even a couple of the first nights as that would give you time to talk to the hospital and find out what they could suggest for a long time stay? Or probably there is a tourist office that could assist you. May your father recover marilynr, my very best wishes to all of you. Don't forget to take good care of yourself also!

Thank you for your suggestions. I arrived Monday morning and my father passed away Monday evening. I am thankful I had a day to share with him. The Danish doctors and nurses were outstanding. I spent 2 more days there making arrangements and came back home. Maybe someday I can return and enjoy beautiful Denmark. Mar

How wonderful that you were able to arrive in time to share some precious moments with him.
|
Oh marilynr, my deepest sympathy.
I will say that your father at age 89 who was planning on taking a cruise from Copenhagen certainly lived life to the fullest. I would imagine that he was a joy and such a role model for all that knew him. How blessed you and your father were to have his last day on this earth together marilynr. May all the memories of your dear father be with you forever. And may you honor his spirit by enjoying your life as he obviously enjoyed his. My prayers are with you and your loved ones. |
Marilyn,
Please accept my sincere condolences. |
I'm very sorry for your loss and so glad you were able to spend time with him. I was on my way to my father and he passed away when I was still in the air. My thoughts are with you, Joan

So sorry to hear of the passing of your father, but if one has to get sick in Europe, then Copenhagen is not a bad place to get sick in. I lived there for over two decades of summers...70s-90s... and have vacationed there for three decades. A few times I took sick and once had to actually go to the emergency room and the staff was wonderful. I waited less than 15 minutes to be seen and didn't have to pay a cent. I was then referred to a private doctor and only had to pay very litte for excellent care. My doctor in the U.S. told me not to worry about medical services in Denmark. He did part of his med-school there way back in the early 60s and has high respect for the Danish medical system. Happy Travels!

My heart and thoughts are with you Marilyn. I can relate to your plight and your great loss.
I am glad that you were able to see your Dad one more time before he passed away. My circustances were quite similar to yours. We just came back from our tour in Taiwan and moved to our base in California, when my sister call me from Rome and told me that my dad was in the hospital. I was able to get a flight right away and went to see my dad.I spent all day with him and at night he passed away while I was in his hospital room. He was able to murmur how much he loved me, closed his eyes and passed away. II thank heaven that at least I saw him one more time. I wasn't able to see my Mom because when the time I received the telegram |
