Language, as StC says, very unlikely that car rental staff will not have some English in Strasbourg (one of the two capitals of the EU). Larger wineries and those in busier towns will have English (and Mandarin etc) I used to think smaller places did less well but I'm always amazed. I was in Rolly Gazmann and his mother (in full workwoman's smock) was switching between French/German and Oxford English).

Jamikins, I can't wait to delve into your trip report and pictures! Thanks for the link.

StCirq & Bilboburgler, thank you for all the helpful advice on renting a car. I'm definitely adding your tips to my travel file. :0)

I am in total AWE of people who are bilingual. What a gift to be able to speak more than one language.

P.S. I wanted to add a special thanks to StCirq for the comprehensive list. I will be calling rather than booking online as you advised.

On top of StCirq's recommendations, specify that you want an automatic, we use a lot of manual transmission here.

Whathello, is the manual transmission a bad choice? For me, I'd HAVE to have a automatic transmission, but the Mr. is driving and he has no trouble driving a vehicle with a manual transmission.

I figured if we were flexible in that area, we might have more choice, no?

An automatic transmission is considerably less expensive, and always guaranteed. An automatic cannot be guaranteed, though normally if you pick up at an airport or busy train station, you stand a good chance of getting one.

I don't know where I left my brain today - it's a MANUAL transmission that is considerably less expensive!

When you book a rental car a list of available cars is displayed which indicates whether the car has manual or automatic transmission. It is as easy as that.

Even if Mr. will drive I would reserve a car that you drive. Mr. might have an illness or does not feel good and it might be good if you are able to drive.

Hi Teacher

I assumed you were the average US preferring the automatic.
Won't do it again ;-)

Yes, manual is less exp. I'm driving my first automatic car since 3 years now. So I have to find my habbits back when I rent a car, but it does come back ... after a while...
