Help--packing for Cote A'zure & Provence
What is suggested for out to dinner? In Manhattan it's jeans, jeans, jeans with a cute top (for a woman).
Is it the same in Southern France or are jeans a no-no? Also, is it humid or dry? Cool at night needing a sweater? We're leaving Sat. so mid-June time frame. Thanks for any advice! |
I usually wear a gauzy skirt and and a cotton top. If an upscale rstaurant, I usually wear a dress. I do wear liteweight jeans in France where it's a rural area but in Cote A'Zure. no.

The Côte d'Azur benefits from a sea climate, and this time of the year the weather shouldn't have warmed up too much. So take a sweater, just in case.
As for the jeans...we see them on the youngsters, mostly teenagers. Not so much on the other generations, although nice slacks are much in evidence on the women. Jeans in the daytime should be okay, although not in restaurants--except for the places on the Cours Saléya. |
Just a head's up if you're leaving tomorrow (Saturday).... bring a warm sweater or jacket. We're into day 6 of a very chilly, very strong Mistral wind and yesterday morning there was a sprinkling of snow in Nice. The wind is supposed to blow through Monday, and it's downright cold at night. And to think... the beginning of last week it was around 90 F.

SNOW?!?! That's something I wasn't expecting....!
I will pack for everything. Undehill--thanks for your recommendations. |
Jeans and a smart top are fine for all but the most formal places. Dresses are pretty popular at the moment too. Bring a sweater, cardigan for evening.
If you live in Manhattan, you will have no problem dressing for the south of France! The nicest shopping, I think, is in St Tropez, in case you find you are not appropriately dressed! |
I expect the mistral (cold wind) will stop by mid-June and it will become very warm and sunny. Be prepared that the sun will be extremely intense in this time of the year. Sweater for evenings are always advisable.
People in the Provence dress casually. It will be very much like Manhattan. For dinner at a formal, star-decorated restaurant, I would wear smart jeans, polo shirt and a light jacket (no tie). |
Great!! Thank you!

Everyone seems to think that the Mistral is a seasonal wind.... actually it can blow at any time of the yea, and does. One July we had a killer Mistral that blew for 12 days - extremely hot. In fact, the sun is already extremely hot - if you're in a sheltered area away from the wind you can get a heck of a sunburn, so beware. Patricia |
I experienced in August one time in Orange!
