Help on Renting Apartment in Oporto

Hello Fodorites!

I will be visiting Oporto in early November for 12 days. I plan to do outside trips but use Oporto as a base since I will also be visiting a friend who lives there.

Anyhow, since I will be staying for a while, I thought renting an apartment would be less costly AND it would make me feel more like a local. I have tried numerous websites but I am finding that not many have holiday rentals in Oporto. Can you guys recommend any? I might have missed some. I am looking for one in the city centre for 2 people (a townhouse or house would be acceptable as well). By the way my dear friend has no idea and cannot give me any advice as to what companies to use-maybe it's because he lives there!

Thanks.

Hotels and guesthouses or hostels ("residenciais) in Oporto are very inexpensive, and if you do the math it may come out to how much you'd pay for an apartment in total. Have you taken a look at www.gooporto.com?

Hello,

I am helping a friend find a place to rent in Lisbon and came across a mention of an apartment for rent in Porto. I remembered this post, so thought I would give you the link. I have no first hand knowledge, but it might be worth an email to investigate. http://www.expatriates.com/cls/1931535.html It says it's a 1BR furnished, for 450 E a month. Good luck.

Good experiences with vrbo.com and holiday-rentals.com

Before I saw Viajero's post, I went to VRBO to look. They have only one in Porto, but it looks wonderful and is 60 euro a night or 420 a week. Only issue is it's fourth floor -- no lift.

Incidentally, how exciting. I LOVED the feel of Porto -- in fact, much more than Lisbon. Loved the old quarter and along the river in particular.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I finally rented a 1 bedroom apartment in the Miragaia area of Oporto through holiday-rentals.co.uk.. I am told Miragaia is a great area to stay in and close to everything. I even had my friend go to the area where the apartment is located to make sure it's nice. I will post my trip report to let you all know as soon as I return. I leave soon.. can't wait!

p.s. For those of you (like me) who need to rent an automatic vehicle in Portugal that doesn't cost the whole amount of your vacation, I have found a great website. They are a consolidator and you can get better rates. Another bonus is that you don't have to pay until you arrive. See link below.
