Help Needed with Greece Itinerary

Jump to last reply

We are 4 adults and two teenage girls, ages 16 and 18, travelling to Greece for the first time this May. We arrive in Athens early in the morning of May 14 and depart at 11 am on May 28. Our only other set plan is a week at a timeshare in Drios, on Paros from Saturday, May 19 to Saturday, May 26. I have been researching options and have started to pull together an itinerary, but I have a few questions...

For our first 5 nights in Greece, we plan to rent an apartment in Athens, see the city and perhaps rent a car for a day or two to take day trips to Sounion to see the Temple of Poseidon and to Nafplion stopping to see the sights at Eleusis and Corinth along the way. Are these reasonable day trips?

While I am delighted to be spending a week on Paros, I would really like to see Santorini as well. We had originally planned to leave Paros on Saturday the 26th, take a ferry to Santorini, stay there overnight and then return to Athens on Sunday to be sure we get our flight on Monday morning. However, after reading some comments about the unreliability of the ferries, I am worried that we may wind up missing our flight. Another alternative would be to stay in Santorini for 2 nights and fly from Santorini to Athens first thing Monday morning to connect with our flight home. Can anyone tell me how reliable these flights from the islands to Athens are?

Or does it make more sense to leave Athens right away upon arrival and take a three night overland tour of Eleusis, Corinth, Olympia, and Delphi, then catch a ferry to Santorini and stay there for 2 nights, then spend our week on Paros and leave Athens for our final two nights?

Any suggestions for reasonably priced but well-located self-catering accommodation in Athens and on Santorini would be most appreciated. We'd like to spend less than 300 euros a night for the 6 of us, whether that be in a 3-bedroom apartment, 3 bedrooms in a b&b or 3 double hotel rooms.

Will the last week in May likely be good beach weather on Paros? Can we do a day trip to Sifnos from Paros and would this be recommended? Or is Antiparos a better day trip?

Thank you very much for your time!
