Help needed for one more stop in Germany
We have one more day left for our Germany trip that we are planning which one is a must see ? Rudesheim, Regensberg or Nurnberg ? I like quaint and romantic.

I'd suggest Regensburg (please note spelling) if it fits into your itinerary.
Rüdesheim is but a tourist trap. Nürnberg has been heavily destroyed during the war, which Regensburg hasn't. I've been to Regensburg for a congress recently and fell in love with the city. A well preserved historical centre with little streets to stroll around, wonderful churches, the medieval bridge and the river. Luckily it hasn't yet been discovered by mass tourism (which won't take long, I'm afraid). You'll find German daily life, many young people due to the university, funny little shops (there are two that sell medieval clothing, for example), and all this in a romantic surrounding. Yes, that's my #1 among the three choices. |
Of the three destinations you mention, I would also vote for Regensburg. In the same general area as Regensburg and Nurnberg, Bamberg would also be a good choice.

Hello JS:
If you are leaving Germany bu flying out of Frankfurt, you may wish to consider a quaint village a few km downstream of Rudesheim (I agree with the earlier characterization of that town) called Assmannshausen. If you put that name in the search box, you'll see my comments on the merit of decompressing there before going home. Good luck. Gradyghost |
Bamberg is an excellent suggestion. Lovely old town that is actually a part of the city, not a tourist enclave--and it was not damaged during the war. Nice riverside views, hotels, restaurants. A UNESCO World Heritage site.

Thanks everyone !

We're going to Regensburg this August for the reasons Quokka mentioned. If for any reason you decide against Regensburg, I would recommend Nurnberg over Rudesheim anytime anyday.

DAX and JerseySue(if you decide to pick Rengensburg) If you have time I would highly recommend a trip to Kloster Weltenburg, which is about 30 km SW of Regensburg. There is a very scenic boat trip there from Kelheim through the Donauduchbruch. There is a pleasant beer garden with (locally) famous beer. The baroque monastery church was built by Cosmas Damian Asam and has an amazing statue of St. George--especially amazing after you have sampled the beer.

Thanks for the tip Vttraveller, that's quite an interesting monastery. It'd be nice to taste a German abbey beer as well.
