$300-$400/night equates to €225 to €300/night at the current exchange rate. Depending on your exact dates, you should be able to find something very comfortable, including those is the Esprit de France group (www.esprit-de-france.com). We like the l’Hôtel Parc Saint-Séverin in this group, but there are 6 others to choose from. The Hotel Varenne Paris (www.varenne-hotel-paris.com) is also a good option, but it may be booked on your dates.

I would suggest the Parc du Luxembourg or, less expensive, but with much to say for it the 175 euro perfectly located Hotel Bonaparte....and spend the extra money on lunch at La Cascade in the Bois de Bologne.

Our favorite is the Hotel des Saints-Peres in St Germaine. It is a part of the Esprit-de-France group mentioned above. It is really well located and has a charming staff who have always been very helpful.

Hotel le Fleurie or Hotel Louis II might work for you. Both in good locations and I have stayed at both but more than a few years ago. Small but clean and comfortable. I think my room at Hotel le Fleurie was a bit bigger but it was quite some time ago. Hotel Louis II is close toe the Odeon metro station and we love the Italian restaurant across the street (Marco Polo) and it is just down from St Sulpice. Gerard Mulot is close by for AM pain au chocolat.

On our recent trip, we stayed in the Saint Germain area for 4 nights at the beginning of the trip, then traveled to Normandy, and stayed one night in the Luxembourg garden area at the end of the trip. In the Saint Germain/Latin Quarter area we stayed at Best Western LA Tour Notre Dame. I loved this hotel. It was on a quiet street a little bit off the tourist track right next to the Cluny Museum I also recommend this museum!). In Luxembourg Gardens area we stayed up at another Best Western. I think it was called BW Rive Guache. Also wonderful and very close to the gardens in a less touristy neighborhood. I highly recommend both of these hotels. Each Best Western is individually owned so they are still authentic.

A charming little hotel is the Hotel Le Clement overlooking St. Germain market ... rooms are small but lovely. Ask for a high floor overlooking the market
