Help! need 3*hotel-Dubrovnik!!!

Hello: We are 5 Canadians & we are planning to be in Dubrovnik for 5 nights next year 2009 (September). We would like nice, clean accomodations at a reasonable cost....for example, a 3 star hotel. We reviewed Hotel Lapad, Hotel Neptun, Hotel Splendid and Hotel Tirena.....we liked what we saw on the internet....however, we have never been to Dubrovnik. Since we have an odd number (5), one of us has to pay for a single room - we are concerned about cost. Does anyone have comments/suggestions. Thank-you kindly....5 Canadians from Ontario

Hi Travelbug, I do have a suggestion and if someone had suggested it to me (before I did it ) I would have said, "No Thanks". I'm glad I found them and hope you will be too. There are family owned rooms all over Croatia, called Sobecs or Zimmers. They are like rooming houses or small apartments or just remodeled rooms when the kids grow up and leave home. There are tons of them all over and the prices are very low. The ones we have stayed in must have their own full bathroom and kitchen or kitchen access. The furniture is sometimes new and modern or old, but clean. The family who owns the property usually live downstairs or next door and its about a fourth of what a hotel would cost you. Try a search here and see what comes up. Two summers ago we drove around Croatia just stopping each night wherever we ended up and always found great Sobecs near town centers for never more then 40 Euros a night, usually less. Good luck.

All the hotels you're looking at are in Lapad, a bus ride away from the old town and the historical sights. They are all nice, but they are just rooms for a higher price.

Please may I suggest you talk about the opportunity to rent an apartment. There are many which can hold a total of 5, with small kitchens to make a decent breakfast, and full bathrooms. Save your money on not eating in a hotel and pick up some milk, coffee, tea etc and have breakfast outside on a patio overlooking the old town.
You can then walk into town in just 25 minutes along the seaside. And you will save money on your room, food and buses.
In September the children are back in school and the local buses are always full. Those of us who do not drive must rely on getting home from market with our bags of groceries. It's a hit and miss on taking the correct bus for you ladies.

We were in Croatia last September and stayed three extra days after our tour ended in Dubrovnik. I spent quite a bit of time checking out apartments in Dubrovnik and we found a great one for about 60 euros p/n--a bit less because we paid in cash. It was only large enough for two, but had a great view over the water and of Old Town--unfortunately it was 85 steps up from the sidewalk-- but there are lots of others listed on the Internet and pictures of the accomodations. We stayed outside the Ploche gate, up the hill, from Old Town. We bought breakfast and lunch food from the nearby markets and only ate out in the evening. You've got a whole year to search for a place, so you should be able to find something that will fit your needs. Ciao!!mhm

try www.dubrovnik-online.com/villa_adriatica .
We will stay there in April but they don't reserve more than 3 months ahead - but have a look.
Excellent location and great view!
