As much as we have travelled, I still got it wrong last trip. To Portugal, beaches, warm weather, right? Lots of time at pool, right? WRONG. Pool was ice cold, and weather wasn't that warm either. Took two swim suits of no use, one dress outfit (never wore it), good shoes, (never out of the case), etc. One cannot be prepared for every eventuality, but light always is best. In most civilized places in the world you can buy what you need or forgot.

Can you imagine what it's like going through a bag of dirty clothes with a customs officer...ask your wife to imagine it....
Note : hotel laundries are a ripoff, you can always find automatic laundrettes who will do a "service wash" very cheaply.

We (my wife and 2 kids and me) just got back from a 9 day trip to France. We traveled about by train and stayed in budget hotels. We went over with 5 suitcases (2 large ones) and 4 backpacks. We thought since the suitcases had wheels we would be ok. Boy were we wrong. Steps in train stations and in hotels killed us. Next time it will be small suitcases and wearing clothes more than once. Shoot that's the way the Parisians do it!

We just came back from a 10 day trip to France and we brought 3 pieces of luggage between the 4 of us (my husband and I and our 2 daughters). My children's and my clothes fit in one Samsonite hard case with wheels and my husband has a small soft case carry on. Our third bag carried all our gifts to friends and relatives in Europe and served as our souvenirs/shopping items bag home. I brought 5 to 6 outfits for each of us with extra shirts and plenty of socks, several sweaters. My husband was actually the one who overpacked for this trip. An umbrella was handy and my kids have rain coats with hoods. One thing i would bring next time is closed toe shoes instead of sandals.
