should it be San Moise with no view, bigger room, closer to vaparetto (which Time Out calls "grotty") or Locando Sturion with view-more money smaller room and bigger walk and stairs (travelling with 2 kids 10 & 13) not my first trip but is for my kids - thanks a lot

TheSan Moise is located just about a
block and half west of the Pza. S. Marco
very good location with plenty of shops
and ristorantes.
The Locando Sturion is located about
a half block south of the Ponte Rialto
and as you say has some viewed rooms.
The location around the Rialto Bridge
is a busy one with the fishmarket and
main produce market at the bottom of
the bridge. You would only be 5 to
8 mins walk over the Rialto and up to
the Pza S. Marco. By all means take
the Sturion, good view, good location.
Personnally we have not stayed at either
hotel but have been to Venice much..

Stayed at Hotel Kette during last visit to Venice in '98. Wonderful mid range priced hotel. Breakfast included in price. Back of hotel is on canal. Short block to Piazza San Marco. Good location. Our room was very small but nicely decorated. Two adults travelling, you may need 2 rooms with kids or they have larger rooms. Liked it a lot. Polite staff, very helpful, secure.

I have stayed at the Sturion and will recommend it highly. It does require a climb up a lot of steps but it is a very nice hotel. Our room was large and looked right out over the canal. As Richard said the location is superb with easy access to St Marks. There are some nice little neighborhead places to eat right in the area as well.

The Sturion is very good choice. Just remember to pack light because you will be carrying those bags up a pretty long flight of stairs (or better yet make the kids carry them!). Go for the Sturion (they also lay out a real nice breakfast buffet).

How many nights are you going to spend in Venice, JParis? 2 or 3? How long you figure you're going to be able to enjoy a view out of the hotel window?

I, for one, would always choose the bigger room with 2 kids. And if by staying in a cheaper hotel I could save the cost of a nice and long gondola ride I would trade the view for this ride hands down ...

I can't speak to the condition of the hotels, but I have traveled with kids and more space would be a major consideration for me. Travel is a 24-7 experience, and even in the best of families loved ones can use a little more space to relax in. I don't think your kids will care much as much about the view.

"Hotel San Moise: I stayed at a beautiful small hotel a three minute walk from San Marco in July. The rate was $120 per night. I loved it (although it didn't have a view to speak of-but the rooms were beautiful; antiques, silk wallpaper,etc.) check out their web page: www.sanmoise.it"

Look into the Hotel Principe. It's less than 100 yards from the train station and the vaporetto...very convenient! Very nice hotel, fair sized rooms, some with a view...decent breakfast. I believe it's under $200.00.

I was there in Feb of last year for valentines day! It was wonderful. I splurged and stayed at the Eruopa Regina. It was out of this world....pricey, but worth every penny. If you don't stay there, check out the bar, lobby or restrnt.

and for heaven's sake...do the rick steves pub crawl! FUN

3 trips to Venice over 30 years. the Danieli (Mom and Dad paid!) the Fenice and the Bauer Grunwald. For the buck, the Fenice had the most charm, next to the opera house and fabulous small cafes in the adjoining piazza. Robert DeNiro stayed there too, but not with me!
