Help me with an affordable hotel in Barcelona

Wowzers I'm finding that Barcelona, Spain is actually an expensive location when it comes to booking a hotel room. My lovely DH prefers to stay at a chain hotel like Marriott or Starwood (and usually 4 or 5 stars). I really don't care myself only that it is in a central location where I can go out and explore on my own (while my DH naps, if he chooses). That said, can anyone recommend an area for us? A hotel that is below $200 a night? We are traveling June 27-July 2 (5 nights) and I can't seem to find anything that is below $200. Advice?

You might want to wait until the new year - a lot of hotels might not have even opened their calendars for next year yet. Also for 5 nights you could consider an apartment, if your husband would go for that.

You want 4 or 5 star (though stars mean something different things in Europe) . . . and then want it for under $200 (approx €165). High end hotels charge high end rates.

I just did a quick look on booking.com and there is not a single 5 star near $200/night. There are a few 4 star at that or lower.

If you want to meet that budget in a higher end property, you will do a bit better renting a flat.

Do you or your husband have hotel points you can use? This trip might be a good time to use them.

You’d be extremely lucky to find any Marriott properties in the center of Barcelona in that price range. More than likely they will be in the 200 to 250€/night price range for a standard double room during the summer, which is only one of the cities high seasons.

I stayed here in October: http://www.hoteljazz.com/es/
It is 2 blocks from the La Ramblas & not far from La
Sagrada.

For your time period it is 206E if you book direct. Rated
a 3-star but should be higher as the 8th floor roof top
pool, lounging area, bar & resto is very very nice.
A lavish breakfast is included.

Front desk very cooperative & my friends and & I
were very happy.

We were very satisfied with the Hitel Lleo: great location, large rooms, modern bathrooms, friendly & helpful front desk staff, moderate price.

YOu are expecting Barcelona to be cheap for some reason. It's a large city with a lot of business, and isn't cheap (that rate is pretty cheap for any major US city). Your expectations are unrealistic, that's all.

4-5 stars means the same thing in hotels anywhere I have been in NOrth American and Europe, those are the top scores. It's the same in EUrope as in the US, a 5* hotel is one of the top hotels in a city. If you want a 4-5* hotel in the US, then you definitely will in Europe, a 3* hotel won't be like that.

I stayed in the NH Calderon in Barcelona and it would definitely suit you, but it has no vacancies. Not sure if it would be below $200, I seriously doubt it, anyway. Now I have also stayed at the Hotel Jazz and it's a great location. It's a 4* hotel, I believe, and it's nice and it does have vacancies but the superior doubles are more like 230 euro, which is closer to $275 probably.

You aren't going to get a 5* hotel for that price on those dates, that's for sure. The H10 and HCC chains might have something. The H10 Universitat (which is a convenient location, right next to the airport bus stop), does have rooms on your dates for about the price you want for a superior double. That's not a bad deal. Check it out. https://www.h10hotels.com/en/barcelo...10-universitat

This is a very good website that lists the official hotel ratings and I think reviews. This is a very good website for all kinds of Barcelona info, by the way.

https://www.barcelona-tourist-guide....ona-spain.html

Jazz is a 3*, but H10 hotels are 4*, and some of the Nh are 3 or 4. Jazz was comfortable enough but I guess it wasn't super nice, that's true (kind of like a basic 3* hotel not that I think of it, simple decor and room sizes), it does have business services but it definitely wasn't as nice as the NH Calderon, though.

We stayed at this hotel in El Born last year for 4 nights - http://www.ciutathotels.com/en/hotel...tat-barcelona/

The location was fantastic, easy walking distance to lots of sights, restaurants etc. The hotel rooms were modern and clean, and staff very helpful. There is a hotel restaurant, and we experienced one of the best dinners on our trip here.

When I searched the price today for a July 2018 date, the price per night was approx 170USD. It is listed as 4 star on hotels.com.

Not really. In Europe (or at least most places in Europe) the star rating is based on specific amenities from a list -- not on level of service or quality of those amenities.

I stayed at the H10 Urquinaona which is about the top of your budget but it was wonderful. Clean modern and located so one can walk everywhere.
