HELP! Looking for non-Las-Vegas-type Paris cabaret show/club...

Dear Fodorites,

I am looking for a cabaret show in Paris, but not the tour-bus kind. More interested in something with a surreal quality, part music, dance, magic, poetry, etc.--without the Las Vegas-type acts (no dinner packages, etc.)

DOES THIS STILL EXIST IN PARIS? Of course, I am willing to travel out of the tourist centers to enjoy this. Someone mentioned "AU LAPIN AGILE." (Anyone know this?)

Thanks a lot,
Betty

I've been to Au Lapin Agile a couple of times and loved it. Check out www.au-lapin-agile.com

If youre French isn't very good, though, I think most of it will be incomprehensible, though the atmosphere and singing will be enjoyable.

I think what you are describing is by definition a tourist-type show, especially with the magic acts and including dance on the program with all those other things. The only cabarets I know that are not Las Vegas type shows and touristy would be in French and music, and there are some of music and dancing but not dancers performing, such as ginguettes outside Paris. Poetry readings are not usually part of musical shows.

Thanks, St Cirq and others for your information! Upon further research, I discovered a few more places that might fit the less-touristy bill: Au Limonaire, Elephante Bleue, etc. I will look into those.
They are mostly all in French (with a mix of singing, magic and fortune-telling)!

My French is at a third-grade level at this point since I haven't practiced it for years...but I think I will still enjoy these mostly French venues as opposed to something from Moulin Rouge with half-naked people running around!

Cheers,
Betty (NYC)

Yes, if you're going out you certainly want to get your money's worth and see entirely naked people running around.

Ha, Rufus! Reminds me of my dad's cornball sense of humor... he used to declare:
"I'm running over to Sears - women's clothes are 'half-off'"..
