Help! Looking for a specific sculpture
I know this will be an odd request, but if anyone can answer this it's the fodorites:

I am getting married in Venice, during Carnevale this Feb. and my fiancé and I would like to do our pictures besides the Bocce di Leone. There are supposed to be 3 of these surviving in Venice, but I can't find the street location listed for of any of them.
The Bocce di Leone (translates to Lions' mouth) were used during the republic as repositories for accusations of crimes. One put the accusation on a rolled up piece of paper into the lions mouth, where they were collected and investigated. Besides the pictures we were going to "accuse" each other of being in love. (Yeah, it's mushy, but we're both young and history majors.)

Can anyone help?

I don't know, but if you post a question on this forum, you may happen get an answer. http://forums.about.com/n/main.asp?w...v=start&lgnF=y There are a lot of very knowledgeable people who contribute to that forum, including quite a few well educated Italians, who live in Italy.

I know there is at least one inside the Doges Palace, within the courtyard, I took a picture of it when I was there in September. According to the Secret Itinerary tour guide, the heads of most of these were knocked off during the revolution. Definately take this tour!

your post intrigued me, so I searched. There's one on Dorsoduro.

"Santa Maria della Visitazione
Situated on the Zattere Algesuati this Renaissance church was built between 1494 and 1524 by the Order of the Gesuati. It has a fine wooden ceiling painted by 16th Century Umbrian and Tuscan artists. The exterior bocca di leone is one of several denunciation boxes in Dorsoduro. Perhaps it was sited here to remind the Jesuits who rules Venice?"

If you search Google for Venice + bocca di leone there are 133 answers. I gave up after 10

Thank you so much. It's strange. I have been trying searches on MSN, lycos and go-to and have found no information.
Thanks again!

kitty
after you take your pictures at S Maria della Visitazione, walk another few steps and get some gelato at
Gelateria Nico at Zattere 922. The gelati are all home made and are excellent in a country of just wonderful icecream.

kitty,
There are 3 bocce di leone at the Doge's Palace. The previously mentioned one in the courtyard, the one outside the Sala del Senato, and the one in the Sala della Bussola. Didn't/don't know about the one in Dorsaduro.

I also get the newletter Joanne refers to and think her suggestion to write those lovely people about any further Bocca is an excellent idea!

PS: There is a via Bocca di Leone with many upscale shops but I think this is named for the Bocci di Leone fountain.

Sorry, I don't know when there are any more (if there are any more), but thought I'd pedantically point out that the plural of "bocca" is "bocche." (Have to add that "h" so that the "c" remains hard.) Have a great trip!

Thanks everyone for your help. We'll post pictures when we get back!

P.S. Sorry about the spelling error. I was taking it directly out of a text book (English). I am starting a berlitz course, hopefully this will help us there.

Kitty,
I will be looking forward to your report on any and all Bocche di Leone you will find. Also, thank you KT--I always appreciate such clarifications (see improved spelling above!).

We are back and married!!!!
We ended up at the Bocca Leone on Santa Maria della Visitazione along Zattere Algesuati. Since there was construction across for the church we had the ceremony on the Ponte longua a little ways down, and then walked back to place a copy of our vows in the lions' mouth. It was a beautiful day and just a fantastic place to be married. We then returned to the Danelli for the reception.

Thanks again for everyone's help!!
