Help - Long Weekend in Cork/Southwest Ireland

Hi there. Taking our first trip to Ireland in late August and would appreciate some help with an itinerary (and any great hotel/restaurant recs). It's a short trip, as I have work in Cork on Thursday, and we fly out of Cork on Monday a bit before noon - but a special occasion for my wife, so want to blow it out a bit.

We fly in on Wednesday afternoon, so will have a bit of time to check out Cork itself on Wednesday, and possibly Thursday evening, unless we head straight out (to Kinsale perhaps?). My wife is intent on the Ring of Kerry, so I think we'd head straight that way of Friday, maybe settle in somewhere nice and explore until Sunday, then make our way back closer to Cork for Sunday night to make our Monday 11:30 AM flight. (Am I correct that racing for an 11 AM flight wouldn't make sense?) Is the Ring all it's cracked up to be, particularly with August crowds? What's the nicest hotel to base out of? And if we head back towards Cork on Sunday, what's a nice stop in easy striking distance of Cork airport. Better to do Kinsale then? Or somewhere north or west of Cork? We're good travelers, into scenery, seafood, comfort, and ambiance, and will be traveling with our 9 year old daughter (so pub time will be limited). Don't want to spend the whole trip in the car though. Thanks in advance for your ideas on how to make this a memorable long weekend! Ken

Hi kenman,

For a special occassion hotel, I would look at the Park Hotel in Kenmare. Stunning property located in Kenmare, which is along the route of the Ring of Kerry, but not quite as touristy as Killarney. Yes, there will be crowds and buses, but it is beautiful. Basing yourself in Kenmare will also allow you to easily do the Ring of Beara - quiet, no buses - stunning, gorgeous scenary.
Here is the hotel information:

I think I would leave Cork on Thursday once your business is done and book into the Park Hotel for 3 nights. I would want to be a little closer to the airport for a Monday morning flight. If you must visit Kinsale, you might want to use late Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening for the Kinsale visit.
