Help, leaving Friday and rain is predicted everywhere!!
 

The day has finally upon us. We leave this Friday (June 10,) for our month long adventure to Austria, Switzerland and Italy. I logged onto the weather channel website and rain is predicted for the next 10 days. During that time we will be in Salzburg, Dolomites and Berner Oberland. I think it is too late to change our itinerary. Two questions.
1. Is there a better website for European weather?
2. Any suggestions for things to do in these areas with rain.
Thank you so much for your help in planning this trip. I guess none of us has control of mother nature. I am only hoping by the time we hit CT, Venice, Panzano and Rome the weather clears. Grazie in advance for your help. KMH

don't panic, weather is unpreditable. We were told a hot day today in Boston. It is now thunder, lightening and heavy rains.

The Swedes say that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. Take rain gear and enjoy the weather! I spent Thanksgiving in Ireland in '95 and had a great time despite steady rain because I dressed for it.

Just prepare for it and enjoy it.

It looks like it might just rain once in a while with wonderful sunbursts in between. Dress warmly though. We are going through a cold front right now although it should be warming up a bit.

The bright side is that there will be
less people out so you'll be able to enjoy the sights without being crowded.

Don;t know where you're from - but in the US in the summer rain often means RAIN - torrential downpours. In europe - if it actually does rain at all (how often is the weatherman right) it is much more likely to be a part day gentle rain, drizzle or even mist.

Rarely enough to make you change any outdoor plans unless you are campling out.

Just take a foldable umbie, relax and go.

I agree..you should already be taking a small, collapsible umbrella but certainly do not change any plans. Just because it MIGHT rain doesn't mean it WILL or that it will do so all day.

Take wellies and an umbrella. Have fun--it's only water! We spent a soaking week in NYC once and loved it. Out of our seven years living in Manhattan, four were drought years, so it was amazing to see everything so clean, fresh and green.

If it's any consolation, we went to Italy exactly a month ago. Just like you, rain was predicted everyday of our trip. I fretted and repacked adding more (and warmer) clothes. I kept checking www.weather.com and www.weatherbase.com up until departure. My worries were unfounded! Not only was the sun shining everyday, it was warm. So...while this may not be what you experience, I've learned to take the weather predictions with a grain of salt. Hope you have a wonderful trip!

it is funny you found rain because in France we should have sun until next wednesday. Switzerland is only 200km from dijon and they usually have our weather the day after or two days later. check here :

I went to Montreal Memorial Day weekend and the forecast was for nonstop rain all weekend. Instead, it was beautiful just up until a couple of hours before we left. So don't worry about it, but as others said, go prepared, particularly with good bad weather shoes. Last year I was in Salzburg for 3 days and the sun barely made an apperance. The driver of our small Sound of Music tour (Bob's tours?) said it rains there all the time. The day of the tour was particularly rainy -- I mean, torrential downpours. He got to the point of the tour where Julie Andrews danced to The Hills Are Alive . . . . He said "this is where people get out and dance around." We all looked at him like he was crazy and he put the van in gear . . . . Bottom line, though, was we had a great time in Salzburg anyway.

Never put much stock in weather forcasts. I remember searching weather web sites trying to get forcasts for Switzerland one summer. The maps read clouds and rain for 10 days.

When I got there, the sun shone for 10 days with very few clouds. One cloud would float by every now and then.

Best summer tan I ever got was that year where it was supposed to have rained every day.

Wait until you get there before you get bummed about the weather

I posted a question last month almost identical to this one because we had a similar situation. We were spending a week and a half in Germany and Austria and rain was predicted for everyday. After reading the great advice and reassurences that many replied, I decided to just let it go and have a great time. We got there and found the weather to be great. Sure, it rained a little a few days at the beginning, but the rain comes and goes very quickly and was not enough to ruin any of our plans. I honestly wouldn't even pay attention to the forecasts. I don't know about your area, but in my neck of the woods our meteorologists barely predict the right weather on the actual day, let alone a week ahead of time!
