starr, what will the weather be like? I'd consider prioritizing air conditioning (but I haven't looked at the forecast).

..make sure not on a main drag..can be noisy..i like plaza navone, spanish steps, travestivere..i find the collesium a bit out of the way..comments re the termeni were a bit extreme but again not my favorite place..dont want to harp, but there is only 1 dble left at hotel residenza..great price near the spanish steps..you can check the reviews in tripadvisor (are excellent several hotels with similar name so check the address.

I found a nice 4 star hotel (Starhotel Metropole) for 113 euro a night that is available for you. It is a bit near the train station though. Anyway it's a Starhotel, one of my favorite italian brand hotel...they are all new and remodeled, very nice.

Here's the website where you can have a look.

WillTravel, I agree with you. Since I began planning this trip in March the only detail my mother wants is the airconditioning situation. We live in the Pacific Northwest where it's pretty temperate and she still has her a/c on in October.

Jay, in your opinion would it be safe for two women to walk from Termini to the hotel at night..say 11pm?

..i am a lady bunny....street is usually ok, but you will likely be coming by subway and walking through the station..this is a bit threatening..have you checked the residenza hotel on rates to go..a/c bit breakfast and ?120 or ?130 euro with tax?? much better area.

My 18 yr old daughter has done it. Would i advise that she hang out there for the entire evening, no I wouldn't. Like I said take the station and draw a three block circle around it. Seriously, maybe it is because i am a guy but i never noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Re walking at night from Termini - different people have different thresholds of comfort but for me, as long as you are both "sensible", you'll be fine.

I think we're "sensible women" so I've booked at Hotel des Artistes. Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate it. I look forward to telling you all about our trip!

Mille Grazie!

Hey Starr, where in the NW. I am from Seattle. Also, FYI across the street from termini there is a package store that sells sandwhiches, gelato etc. they also have a really good selection of chianti classicos. Make sure you get one at the end of the day to drink on the rooftop of the hotel. You will meet some other nice travellers and really enjoy yourself.

Hi Jay. I'm in Portland. I'm leaving sunny weather for rain and thunderstorms now happening in Rome. Ah well, sitting at the Trevi in the rain does sound nice though. Thanks for the info on the chianti and sandwiches. The rooftop terrace sounds like a wonderful time spent with family and fellow travelers.

Hi starr,

Also check the reviews on tripadvisor.com--again very mixed. According to the reviews, it sounds like a hostel with a few private rooms.

If you are taking your mother to des artistes...you might want to rethink...reviews called it essentially a backpacker hotel. Also it looks as though it is on the OTHER side of termini, away from trevi, pantheon, etc.

The reviews for Starhotel Metropole werent much better though...complaints of construction....so I don't know. But I would read the reviews of des artistes as other posters have said...were fairly mixed.

Hello Jocelyn and TravelBunny,

I too looked at the comments on tripadvisor but wasn't too concerned. I'm not a fussy traveler...willing to forgo some things in my sleeping accomodations so I can afford going to Italy in the first place. I'll let you know how the hotel was when I get back.

starr: I have spent over 2 months in 7 trips within 100m of the Southside of Termini which is considered the seedy side.
As far a physical safety goes the area is fine and the northside where that hotel is even better. I've never seen anything or anyone that made me feel unsafe.
Also I have been reading European travel forums for 7 yrs and have never read of a 1st hand experience of anyone who has been a victim of any type of physical or violent crime in the Termini area.
It isn't a romantic location, you might see a few hookers and some homeless people near the station. Also some pickpockets and crooks in the station who will walk-off with your luggage if given half a chance. It isn't an epidemic problem and they are nonviolent. There is also a strong police presence in the station. Regards, Walter

Thanks Jay and Walter. I'm looking forward to it. I called my mom to let her know where we are staying and the reviews and all she said was, "ok, but does it have a/c?" I think will be just fine. Thanks again!
