Help! Just 3 nights in CROATIA: where should we go?

Hi Everybody,

We'd like to do a side trip in Croatia this coming mid-to-late September (our first time there). We'll be based near Venice, Italy and may drive from there.

With only 3 nights in Croatia, where would you go? DUBROVNIK with a side trip to an outlying island? Or concentrate on a smaller city like ROVINJ and its surroundings?

Any advice on inexpensive accomodations (B&Bs) would also be greatly appreciated.

We love to walk a lot... and also like to mix in nightlife (clubs) and explore interesting, artsy shops as well.

Thank you!

topping... also if anyone has advice on ROVINJ and the surrounding areas of ISTRIA, please post!

Rovinj sounds lovely... we're a young couple that likes to hike, shop, see cool architecture... and also one night of clubbing (dancing) would be great too.

Thanks!

I know people who love Rovinj but I wasn't thrilled with it--possibly because it was rainy when we spent 4 nights there.

Dubrovnik is great but it's too far to drive from Venice with the time that you have.

I'd consider driving to Ljubljana in Slovenia. It's an easier drive than Rovinj and has lots of then things that you're looking for!

We loved Rovinj - we stayed there 4 nights, had great weather, and saw one of the most amazing sunsets ever. We still remember it, after 8 years. We had a car and took day trips to Pula, Porec and the hilltop villages in Istria.

Ljubljana is bigger, and so it has more nightlife/clubs. Lake Bled (with a castle, Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj nearby) would be great for a day trip, or two.

I loved them both, hard to tell which one to pick.

You can go to Slovenia only this trip, Ljubljana and Lake Bled, and save Croatia for when you have more time. Or you can spend your three days in Istria, basing in Rovinj or Porec. But just understand Istria has a very Italian flavor; you're missing a big part of Croatia, the real Croatia.

With only 3 days, I agree that either Slovenia or Istria makes most sense. You really need at least 2, if not 3 weeks, to see Croatia.

Marsle, xyz99, Mimar & kja: Thank you! It had not even ocurred to me to consider concentrating this trip in Slovenia... but I like the idea of the contrast between Ljubljana and Lake Bled... and we're crazy about castles! Great ideas, Everyone. Now just need to do more research on Ljubljana...
