Help: Itinerary Planning for Iceland

Hi people,

We are a family of 5 travelling to Iceland to meet my parents who stay in Reyjkavic.

We plan to stay there for a week.

I'm trying to plan the week such that we stay in Reykjavic for 3-4 days and spend some time out of the city also!

Would like some guidance on the 2- or 3-day plan for Jokursarlon etc.

1 day we plan to go around the Golden Circle

I want to plan a night-stay somewhere along the way to Jokursarlon so that we can take our time during the journey and cover all the waterfalls along the way. I also want to plan this in such a way that we can take the ferry to Westman Islands for an afternoon to check out the Puffins.

I would like to cover as much of South Iceland as possible during this trip and would prefer if the above Vik-Jokursarlon trip can take place overnight itself.

Have heard that Iceland has few hotels and most get reserved by March itself. So I want to plan this part of my Europe trip as soon as possible.

Looking forward to planning this further!

Fodorites please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there's not much to do in Iceland other than soaking in hot pools and riding poneys.

I would recommend you check on Tripadvisor. The Iceland board there is really a lot more active than Fodors.

When are you going? I'm planning to go to Iceland in August, and I was advised to book my accommodation early.

You're wrong.
There are stunning drives, amazing hikes, many, many museums, whale and bird wTching, interesting history.
I hope you were joking.

How old are the kids?

We are a family of 5 and spent 5 days there last summer - we had a great time and would go back in a heartbeat! We rented a great house in Hveragerdi.

We did not spend much time in Reykjavik - only an afternoon. However, we did spend time doing the following:
- Inside the Volcano - hike to it and go inside
- glacier hiking on Solheimajokull
- Jokulsarlon (zodiac boat tour)
- Golden Circle waterfalls, geysers
- Riverjet boat tour
- snorkeling at Silfra
- sea kayaking in Stokkseyri

I will work on my trip report....

Haha @KodakMoment! You're in for a surprise!

Thanks @SusanInToronto! We are going to be there from 18th June - 26th June. I was told accommodation becomes difficult after March. I'm hoping I get lucky :/

Yes @abram! So excited. Specially to check out the puffins!

Hey @surfmom: No kids actually. Sorry, I should have been more specific.. Me (30), husband (30), brother-in-law (28), mother-in-law and father-inlaw going to Iceland (Reykjavic) where my parents and sister (27) are staying currently. During that one week in Iceland, we want to plan an overnight or 2 night trip to the South. I know most of the highlights but its getting difficult to plan the 2 days. For example,

1) Which city should I look for the hotel in
2) How do I plan the sights on Day 1 and Day 2 - best time for each place. Since we'll be returning the same way, we can check out some sights on our way back too.. if time doesnt permit while going towards South.

So just for those 1/2 days I need someone to help me chalk out the plan.. How to break it up! :)

I will correct you, you are wrong. I spent 2 weeks there and could have stayed longer. Hope to go back next winter.

I would consider using Vik as a halfway point. It is a fairly large town and to do a day trip from there to Jokulsarlon is very reasonable. Also supposed to have nice beaches, I think?

I'll have to go back and re-read the questions, but I would look at that -

Hey.. Was doing my research on the side.. Concluded on the same. To break it at Vik.

Now I'm not getting accommodation for 8 people for a night.. :(

The only accommodation closest to Vik is in Hellisholar.. Which is so close to Reykjavic.. So dont see a point staying there..

Hoping for some openings.. Lets see.. !
