Help! Internet connection in Europe
We bought a laptop to take to Europe in May, but we use SW Bell as our ISP, and they only provide US service.

Can anyone make a recommendation. Do hotels offer a local dial up number? If we need to get another ISP account for Europe, can you recommend an inexpensive one? Thanks! Kay

Check with ATT for there internal dialup service. I used it in Japan with great success.

Sorry for the typo.

International dialup

Sorry to say this (not a big AT&T fan), but AT&T Worldnet has the most international connections, including many in Europe. I used them often with success in many different Eurpoean countries during my years in the Navy. Get an account set up now, and you'll be able to use it there as well (for an additional fee).

I used my att.net account when I'm in the UK, and there is no extra charge. Of course, you have to pay for the phone call.

I travel with a laptop. And I never connect online with it. Cybercafes are so much cheaper and easier. Carry a floppy disk into and out of the cyber cafe with you for offline compoasing and reading/savoring.

Laptops are for writing, reading and spreadsheets. cybercafes are for internet.

Best wishes,

Rex
Are there any restrictions on laptops on international flights since 9/11? Do they have to go in checked luggage?
Santa Chiara Mar 30th, 2002 04:10 AM

You do not have to put your laptop in checked luggage. I have flown twice with one since Sept. 11. Sometimes they make you take it out and open, but most of the time they don't.

CompuServe, AOL and MSN have internationl access via local numbers. I have used CompuServe all over the world since the days of the cradle modems.

Rich

We found Earthlink to have the most local access numbers. Didn't have to dial long distance even from the small towns.

If this is true about Earthlink, it sounds like good new news.
I'll cast my vote for ATT service. I've used it without a problem in Greece, Egypt, France and Italy.

Thanks, schiara.
AOL offer 100 hours free trial here - get a disk from most computer mags in Europe.
Of course you will have to phone the freephone number at the end to cancel & you will probably need a flamethrower to get the suckerware out of your machine.Rex is right.

Joe Apr 1st, 2002 11:26 AM

Rex, no one calls them "floppy" disks anymore. But you probably also use words like slacks and gals.

Thanks to all of you.
