Help in finding an art/painting school in Madrid

A friend is interested in going to Madrid for 2 weeks to 2 months to take art classes. (She's already a reasonably accomplished artist & has sold work. She speaks some Spanish.)

I've done a google search & have found tons of info on language classes, flamenco, art history etc. The closest I've found is a combination language/art program for 10-12 days based in Toledo. Any suggestions on schools, contacts, websites would be much appreciated.

Andy, thank you so much for taking the time to help me in this search. I know how time consuming it can be. Unfortunately as I read the website for the Sun Valley school, the shortest class offered is a year-and this is for a basic design course-not painting (she's already an accomplished graphic designer & could probably teach this course!). For a fine arts program, they only offer a 3 year diploma program.

I think what we're looking for is something like the Art Students League in NYC but in Madrid, if possible.

Any other thoughts (from anyone) would be greatly appreciated.

You might try a google search with "art workshops abroad" Workshops are intense courses which typically last from one day to several days to two weeks or more. Most can be taken for undergraduate and/or graduate credit.

mclaurie,
Right off hand I can't think of any in Madrid, but this would be a perfect question for the message boards at
www.multimadrid.com and
www.madridman.com, as they're both populated with Madrid residents, expats and foreign students now living/studying/working in Madrid, and they are very helpful with questions just like your own. I know that there are summer courses at the U. of Salamanca that combine language and art but I don't know exactly what kind of art-she might be highly overqualified for those classes if she's an accomplished artist already who sells her work.

The U.C.M. (University of Madrid)is offering a Master in Painting March-June 2004 you can check in http://www.ucm.es/info/pintura/
This same site has a email addres where I suggest you contact for more information regarding paintings schools.

Thanks so much for your helpful advice Maribel! We will try those boards.

As to being too accomplished, most artists feel they can hone their skills by taking classes. A good teacher can provide input for any level student. She had identified a summer course in Florence but has now decided she'd prefer Madrid (or someplace in Spain) as she speaks some Spanish (but no Italian) and she has more of an affinity to Spain. In my researching I read that both Picasso & Dali took lessons in Madrid (although obviously not recently :)) ) Thanks again!

mclaurie,
Yes, I believe both Picasso and Dali were accepted as young students at the prestigious Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. The museum of the Real Academia on Alcala is one of Madrid's little gems, filled with Spanish Baroque, that I'm sure your friend would enjoy.
