Pesonally, my obsession over my next trip, the planning and reading books, and researching on the internet is part of the traveling experience....also, it gets me through the months in between trips!

I'm already trying to figure out where I want to go after my next trip which isn't until October!

Obsessed, pas moi! I am currently listening to one of my French CDs whilst cooking dinner, after dinner I will be doing my homework for my weekly French class. If any time is left, perhaps a half an hour of planning for a "french" dinner party for we will be holding very soon. Not to mention scouring this board every day. And loving it ...

Marilyn, I admire you for tackling that! I can't even figure out how to work the digital camera on the computer. I'd love to see your effort also.

An on line scrapbook sounds great. I just got a computer though and feel like i know NOTHING. It certainly sounds really interesting, but very challenging. I do traditional scrapbooking and would love to see how the two compare. This site and everyone's tips have been helpful and fun to read. Now that i have this computer to look things up i am sort of wondering how i managed all these years without it.

Once again, thanks to all of you! It is nice to know I am not alone.

I'm not really worried about our trip, but I just cannot quit thinking (and dreaming) about it!!

Marilyn... I'd love to see your online scrapbook! What a wonderful idea! And a great way to keep reliving your trip...

LoveItaly, thank you again for the sound advice and letting me know it's okay to continually think about my upcoming trip!

dsm22 - I also do traditional scrapbooking and look forward to scrapping my Italian memories!

Oh yes, just for the record... today my DH and I went "trip shopping". He found a pair of shoes immediately that made him feel like he was "walking on clouds" and found two new outfits to pack, that packs well and light. I came home with nothing. Not even the little packets of Woolite that I originally went for! None of the shoes fit well, and not one of the outfits looked right! Oh well, as Scarlett says (I think it was Scarlett!) I guess I'll have to go shopping again!

Thank you all again...

Billie

Ah nbbrown you have touched on another
interesting area of obsession when it comes to my trip planning. I have clothes, I have plenty of clothes. Just ask my husband, he'll tell you. So why in heavens name do I need to buy new clothes to take on my trip??? I don't know. The one thing that is non negotiable is I must bring brand new comfy socks........they have plenty of spring for all of the sight seeing that you do. Why does a girl ever need cute new shoes and a cuter bag to match?? Yeah it took me 2 months and 3 different jackets before I got my perfect London trip jacket. Maybe I am thinking that it may not be just "traveling obsession" that I am aflicted with after thinking about the whole shopping for vacation clothes thing. Come to think of it I have an AWFUL lot of stamping and scrapbooking stuff. HMMMMMM.........

Ladies, I have posted this before but I will say it again.

New clothes hold up better on a trip then clothes that have been washed or drycleaned many times.

Now honestly that is true! I promise you.

And I am sticking to that story as long as I can travel (even if dear Scarlett did tease me about it).

But seriously, it is true. New clothes do hold up better when traveling. :

I have long been an obsessive planner, starting with my first backpacking trip to Europe 15 years ago when I read and highlighted the entire "Let's Go Europe".
Then, I had a 2 year obsession planning a 9 month around the world in 98-99, well before there was sooooo much info on the internet.
Now, I'm just counting down the days to my next week in Paris and Lyon(only 13 days to go!)
But how's this for obsessive? Not only did I book the plane tickets, apartment, and train tickets online, but I even printed out RER and metro routes to and from the airport!
My final obsession however is 15 pages of "notes" I've cut and pasted from what I've read online; restaurants divided up by arrondisments, sightseeing, markets, etc.
Before we leave I will pack everything days in advance, just to make sure it all fits in my carry-on.
And my husband? He just relaxes and comes along for the ride!

Loveitaly and DSM-
I forgot to add, I almost always buy new clothes before I travel too. I have to have the "perfect" shoes or pants, etc.
This upcoming trip has been harder, because it's Paris (read, "fashionable&quot and it will be cold and probably raining. I won't be able to make do with a pair of sandals and a pair of hiking boots like when I travel in south east asia.
So, I had to buy two new pairs of low boots to wear with pants and yes, jeans; one black leather 2 inch stacked heel and one brown suede with rubber sole.
BTW, last year I obsessively planned a trip to Vietnam and then we decided we couldn't go. I've got a great 2 week trip all layed out if anyone is interested.

Kristina, your boots etc. sound wonderful!

About the wardrobe for Vietnam, just make sure you buy tickets to go there before the clothes go out of style.

And we wonder why we drive men crazy? LOL. I can just seem some of the male Fodorites right at this moment sitting at their computers just shaking their heads. They just don't get it, do they?

Ooooooh, well Kristina, if you don't have the wardrobe for Vietnam purchased then just forget the trip, it is not important, LOL.

LoveItaly, DSM and Kristina, I agree with your "new clothes hold up the best" post. We don't travel a lot at all (in fact, this is our biggest trip ever)... but it makes sense. Plus, wherever you go, it is either a different time of year, different styles, need for the "perfect thing", or just time to shop!

LoveItaly, I'm sure the men don't get it at all, like you say. My husband, however, did feel bad that I didn't find ONE thing today that I could get for our trip!

Hi nbbrown, dear one, do you hopefully have the whole weekend to shop? I hope so.

All kidding aside, and I am serious, new clothes do travel better then clothes that have had lots of washings or drycleaning. I think because of the sizing (not sure if that is spelled correctly) in them. They seem to pack better, wrinkle less and just travel better.

If you can go shopping all weekend just look at it this way nbbrown, you won't be home to drive you dear husband crazy. So look at it as an act of kindness. Have fun!

Actually, LoveItally, I can not only go a whole weekend, but I have three days in Portland when I can do some shopping for my trip! Waaahoo! I'll just make sure I tell my husband that it is an "act of kindness"!!

LoveItaly, do you buy special travel clothes, or just regular kind of clothes? What is the best kind of stuff that doesn't wrinkle? Hubby bought mosly "microfiber" stuff. Is that right?

Thanks!

Billie

nbbrown, WOW, three days of shopping. Oh Paradise, LOL!

BTW, are you talking about Portland OR or Portland, Maine? I have family in Portland OR and am up there from time to time.

About clothes. You are going to Italy in June with a few days in London right?

I do not know how long you will be gone but I have always found if I pack for a week that is enough for the trip no matter how long it is.

I wash lingerie at the hotel, bring about 4 to 5 sets.

I always have 3 pair of shoes. For June I would have a great pair of sandals, an interesting pair of flats and one pair of heels. Or if you don't want heels a pair of ballet flats would be great. Just make sure that they are all comfy and that the daytime shoes will be good for walking.

Two bags. One for day, shoulder bag, and a much smaller one for evening.

I always keep the color of the shoes and the bags the same, be it black or whatever. The new color for this season is metallic, and that can be a great basic color. But this year if you want to have a "fun" color for your bags there is a big selection out there, that would be a fun thing to do.

I would pack say pants, capris, skirts T shirts, cotton sweaters and dress(es).
I love a blazer for those airconditioned restaurants or chilly nights. Whether this would be warm enough for London or not I do not know unfortunatly.

I do try to bring clothes that mixmatch. The cotton sweaters that will work with pants, capris or a skirt. The Tshirts that will work with the same. The dress or dresses for those special restaurant evening. But maybe not even necessary, depending on what you will be doing.

Materials that I tend to like is cotton with a bit of lycra for pants and capri's. Cotton sweaters. Cotton Tshirts. If you take a dress or two I would chose rayon or silk or a blend. I think all materials have their pro and cons.

I do have a longish black waterproof trench coat that is lightweight but doubt if you would need something like that in June.

If you have or could find a lightweight wool blazer in a neutral color that would go with your clothes that would be great. Bring it on the plane with you.

I use to have some 3 piece suits. Blazer, pants and skirt. That was fantastic for traveling. They were light weight wool. You can dress it up for evenings wearing the skirt and jacket with a great top, wear the pants and jacket with a Tshirt for daytime casual, take the jacket off if it gets warm etc. But I have not seen any the past few years. But there is not the greatest selection of clothes where I live. I usually have to go into SF to find what I want, and even then I am not succesful.

If you found a light weight pantsuit though I think that would work well, Again you can make it casual for day or dressier for evening.

Also, some of my friends in Italy that are employeed are wearing pantsuits with dark colored training shoes. So that might be something to think about.

I do not buy "travel clothes" I buy clothes that will be great for traveling but that I also can wear after the trip.

So is it Portland OR or Maine that you will be shopping in? I love to shop in Portland OR. Let me know.

And have a fun weekend. How exciting.
Let us know how your weekend shopping trip goes? And good luck, hope you find some fabulous buys!

Not that I think it will work, but I am so going to use the whole line of reasoning that new clothes hold up better for packing and get less wrinkled.... Still don't think he will buy it. I am sure that I will drive everyone nuts by the time I take my trip....I started researching now for my trip in june or july of 2006. How is that for obsessed?? That is how I stubled on this website. You people are so informed, and just as obsessed. This is great.

dsm22, It is true, honest, new clothes travel better.

I will start a new thread about all the postive aspects of taking new clothes on a trip. Will probably not do it tonight but tomorrow I will. And honestly, there are lots of advantages.

P.S. We gals have to stick together, LOL.

Hi everyone! I'm in college and obsessed with studying abroad, and this is the perfect forum i've ever found. I'm interested in studying abroad in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Sydney, London, Tubingen, Bern, Cannes, and Florence. What are all of your thoughts on those places???
