A client of my husband's has invited us, the clueless non-skiers to a restaurant in a mountain village above St. Moritz. He says that after dinner we will take a toboggan ride back to our hotel. At first I thought he was kidding, but it seems he's serious! I know James Bond would handle all of this gracefuily in a tux, but honestly, what do we wear for this evening?!

Why don't you just ask your husbands client? I would imagine he would know.

I googled toboggan ride St Moritz, hoping for your sake ( as it would be for mine) that a tobaggon could also be a horse drawn carriage or something similar lol.
Instead, I read how many people finish dinner then slide down the mt on their toboggan..

We did this a number of years ago in Austria. It was a wonderfully fun experience, and not at all frightening to zip down the mountain on a toboggan.

We went to dinner in our usual ski togs; perhaps with a dressier sweater for dinner. After dinner we simply put on the parkas, scarves, and gloves we wore on the slopes and either trudged or were driven to the top of the toboggan run.

They handed us a tot of something numbinly alcoholic at the top (for courage, I suppose) and down we went with a whoop, and ended up all laughing and windblown for more alcohol and laughs by the fire.

Don't worry about it. I'm sure you will have a fine time. Your host would not invite you to anything that would be either dangerous or embarrassing, I'm sure.

Yeah, but Weadles is a non-skier and as such is unlikely to have ski togs. So, wearing her usual ski togs won't help her decide what to wear. Clothing is the issue, not danger or embarrassment, right?

I'd say wear your most waterproof pants, boots, and coats. But if I'm not skiing I don't usually carry these things with me.

What kind of vacation dresser are you, Weadles? Are you planning on snow activities on this trip? If not, it sounds like you may have to pack some special things... Or maybe buy a fabulous ski outfit, rent equipment and take a fun lesson! Then you'll have the outfit ready!!

Simply ask the person who gave the invitation what to wear as a non skier

And please tell us how it went when you come back!

Scarlet, I really appreciate the information! And thanks very much to everybody else, too. We're splurging for some ski clothes, and hoping that this weekend will convert us. The toboganning part sounds like fun--although I hope the pre-drink ride is good! We're both afraid of heights!

Well, perhaps the toboggan you are going on is something bigger, but the one we went on in Austria was no big deal. It was like the ones we used to go on as kids. Just a flat wooden sled with the end curved up. Didn't go in any sort of banked track, jsut in a groove in the snow, down a moderate hill. Soemthing the kids would jue during the daytime --- hike up the hill dragging the toboggan behind them on a rope, argue on who will get to &quot;steer&quot;, then all sit down in a line, push off and whizz down to whoops and shrieks of laughter.

We also did this at Lake Placid a couple of times, where you go down a steep ramp, and then slide out onto the ice for an increadible distance.

Weadles, can you drink during the ride? If so, don't wear anything too fancy. If I were doing this, I would have pre, during and several post ride drinks. Enjoy and have fun, Weadles!

Ski resorts, even the most chic, are rather casual places. You'll want to dress warmly and wear outer wear you can peel off to reveal perhaps a nice sweater when you're in the restaurant. There will be plenty of folks in full length furs, but it's not required.

It sounds like a once in a lifetime experience. Enjoy and please do report back!

Bring a shawl, mittens and sensible shoes for walking in the snow. Also bring a coat that you can button up.

Enjoy! It's the best way to enjoy a nice winter evening in the alps.

I was thinking of taking my two goldens with me so they could pull the toboggan down the hill, but I guess that's not happening. Anyway, thanks, everybody! Am looking forward to the experience- with white knuckles!
