If you are on a budget of Euro30 then you are best to look at set menus for lunch as the same set menu for dinner is usually far more expensive. Others have suggested to look around on the day, particularly at those in which locals are dining and I could not agree more. Any restaurant of note will cost more than E30.

I agree with Leely 2 and Handel. It's hard to eat really well on 30Euros. When I'm on a tight budget, I try to have a great, late lunch and a picnic dinner. The french "traiteurs" have good prepared food, french yoghurt is lovely, as is the cheese, and the produce is beautiful, even in winter.
Some inexpensive hotels even invite you to eat a picnic in their breakfast rooms (never in your room). This has given me a much better experience of Paris than eating only at the cheapest restaurants. And you'll eat much better for the money. If you like doing research, check out Lebovitz and Choc. and Zucchini (both mentioned by Leely2) for shops, not just restaurants. Patricia Wells' book Paris Bistro Cooking lists her favorite markets, fromageries etc. Good luck. |
One of my most memorable meals was a wonderful chicken salad sandwich I spotted in the window of a bakery, took and ate on a park bench. Crepes and 'hot dogs' (bagette, sausage, melted cheese) from a street vendor were two other favorites. Then you have more cash left for the sit-down restaurant meals.
