Help! How do I travel by train from FCO to Florence

Do I have to ride the train from FCO into Rome and then pick up a main line to Florence? I fly into FCO and spend several nights in Florence. Any suggestions? or should I rent a car?

Thanks, Mary

Yes, you'll have to go into Rome. There's an airport shuttle train that you take into Rome, Termini station, where you connect with trains to Florence. You can buy tickets for the entire trip at the airport station. If you only need to get from Rome to Florence, don't rent a car.

Thanks for the tips. You also answered my other question - whether I needed to purchase the ticket prior to arrival to FCO.

But if you could answer another: Is the train shuttle station @ FCO conducive to waiting for the other part of my group, and where exactly is the station located in the terminal?

Thanks again, Mary

Hi

ellenem is correct.

The Leonardo da Vinci shuttle from FCO to Roma Termini (TE) runs every 1/2 hr on the 7.

Schedules for trains from Rome TE to Florence FSMN are at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/

It took us about 3 hr from the time the plane touched down at FCO to get to Rome TE. The shuttle somes into Rome on track 24, I think. You have to walk some distance to your train to Florence.

See http://www.romatermini.it/ for a map of this and all other major Italian train stations.

There is some helpful information, including a map of FCO at
http://www.worldairportguide.com/Airports/fco/fco.asp

After you leave the Customs and Immigration area the way to the shuttle train is clearly marked. It is outside the International Arrivals area.

It would be difficult for me to describe the location of the station, aside from the facts that it's right there on the other side of the access road from the terminal. Follow the signs out of baggage claim. I believe it will send you up escalators and across a walkway. Easy to find. I don't think there is a major waiting room of any kind, but there might be a few benches.

I saw ira's note above that it took 3 hours to get to Rome Termini (TE) from FCO. That seems like an awfully long time. Is the majority of that time spent on the shuttle? Customs?

My upcoming flight arrives into FCO at 7:50am. We will head straight to TE and take the Eurostar straight to Florence. When should I expect to arrive into Florence on best case scenario?

Good morning, mlflip
Was faced with the same problem last two weeks ago and that was to arrive at FCO, take the train to Rome Termini
and continue on to Firenze. We (4) decided to rent a car drive from FCO to the ring road around Rome and head
north on the A1 to Firenze..Everything worked out very well up to Firenze when
we hit a traffic jam that lasted about 30 mins, finally exited at Firenze Certosa, had very good street directions that required reading the
street signs on the passing buildings.
This was difficult, however with a mape
and compass used dead reckoning as central firenze is due north of Certosa
worked very good and got us to the bridge on which we wanted to crosss the
Arno. It is about 270km approx a 3 hour drive. Richard of LaGrange Park, IL..

Hi mgib,

That was the time from "touch down" to arrival. The train only takes 1/2 hr.
