Help-getting to airport at 5am from Venice

We will be in Venice in September and need to be at the airport in the early morning hour (on a Monday morning) to get a 6:35 am flight. In looking at the schedules I do not see a boat that leaves from the Cannaregio area at that time. Any suggestions or am I missing something? Thanks, Shirley

Okay, Luv-if you're staying up there in Cannaregio (which is where you'll always find me) then I think your best option is to take the blue ATVO bus from Piazzale Roma to the airport-and the first one leaves at 5:05, takes 20 minutes and costs Euro 3.00.

Check out this excellent website that explains the bus transportation system to and from Pze. Roma to the airport:

Hi Girlspytravel, Thanks for the info. We will post a trip report when we return. 50 days and counting until we arrive in Italy, 61 days until much anticipated Venice! Shirley

Topping this post-We may just end up splurging on the expensive water taxi. We have decided to play it by ear at this point. We can get to the airport as early as we need to be there, but it is a rather convoluted route for so early in the morning if we take the cheaper option. Our biggest concern was lugging our excess luggage but it appears we can store that at the airport. Hate to think about rolling luggage through the walkways at that time of the morning-seems rather rude. 45 days and counting until we arrive in Italy, 55 to Venice! Shirley

Water taxi warning: make sure of the weather. Last November, ours arrived at our hotel promptly at 5AM but could not go to the airport owing to heavy fog. The owner took us as far as Piazzale Roma where he had arranged for two auto taxis (or perhaps two of his pals) to meet us.

We got to the airport after a 120kph(80mph)race through dense fog, but fortunately no one else was on the road at the time. Both charged us the standard fees, from our hotel on the Grand Canal to Piazzale Roma and from PR to the airport.

This airport was very, very busy in the early morning as many people are doing what you are doing, making a connection back to the States from Munich, Frankfurt, CDG, or Milan. There are long lines for checkin and for security. You can get espresso but not much in the way of food. If I had it to do over again, I would have flown to Munich the night before and stayed there until my late morning flight. But to be fair, in the way that Italy has, order finally obtains out of chaos, and we made our plane. Just feeling a little older.

We had the exact same experience as Ackislander last October. However, the water taxi worked perfect for us with a very early departure in a previous July.

Hmmmm, I think I'll be like Scarlett and worry about this tomorrow-after all, this will be on the way home (end of vacation), not on the way there (beginning of vacation)! Is it foggy in the mornings in September?? Shirley

My daughters and I got to the airport 1 hr 10 min before our flight (delayed vaparetto) and the flight had been closed early. We begged, pleaded, pointed out they had closed early...and was denied boarding.

Beware.

Ummm, that would be WERE denied boarding.

Do check with the airline to be sure what time the counter opens. Friends of ours got to the airport 1-1/2 hours before flight time and had to wait 1/2 hour before anyone from the airline arrived.

Thanks for the tips! Shirley

That has happened to me. One time the airport (the old Marco Polo) was not even open. And it is not uncommon from my experience to not have the airine counters open even though you are told to be there at that time. But get there anyway as there will be lots of passengers no doubt. And don't be shocked if the Italian passengers do not pay any attention to what ever type of line there is, getting in line is a concept the Italians haven't seem to ever got the knack of, lol.

Thanks, I've seen that Italian "video" (about the lines). Shirley-done planning, just coasting now as we are less than 2 days from leaving!
