Madrid would be an overnight train ride unless you decided to fly. I love love love Spain, but Amsterdam is also wonderful! You really can't go wrong.

What do you suggest? Train or air.

If you wanna get there fast then it's air. Easyjet.com has good prices. I enjoyed riding the trains, but it definitely takes longer for some destinations. You don't usually have to pre-book train travel. You can usually buy tickets same day.

I went onto easyjet.com and there are no flights from Paris to Amsterdam. There's one from Basel Mulhouse to Amsterdam.

Good/Bad? Yes/no? need guidance!

You might try British Airways or consider taking the train. I think it's about a 4 hour journey from Paris to Amsterdam. Others might have better advice for this journey.
