Help for travel from Avignon to Nice, Cannes Monaco et.c.

After spending a week on a barge cruise then 5 days touring around Avignon we want to travel to the above area. We will leave Avignon on Thursday morning and one of the couples has to catch a flight from Nice on Friday evening around 6pm. We are free until our flight on Monday morning out of Lyon so that is where we would like to end up. Can anyone give us some hints on what to see, where to eat and stay along the way. Do you think we need to make reservations for a hotels as we will be travelling the middle of October. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You folks are all over the place.

Lyon is North of Avignon by a few hours, while Nice is SE by a few hours. You certainly have sufficient time to drive towards Nice so your friends can leave the next evening. The drive time from Avignon is about 3-hrs without stops.

I would, however, arrange for a hotel for Thursday evening ahead of time. While the big hotels in Nice are open, some of the small ones or B&Bs start closing up around that time. And for any hotels in the Provence area, this also holds true (small places start closing up end-Oct/beg-Nov)

While still in Avignon (if not on your tour) do tour the Palais de Pape. Otherwise, head onto Les Baux and from there onto Aix-en-Provence, but you won't be able too spend much time at each or both, considering that night comes early and I don't believe you still want to be on the road. You want to be at your hotel for the evening before dark.

Once at hotel, have your friends arrange for transfer to the airport for next day, unless you plan to take them. Also check with any hotel you book if they have on-site parking (or off-site) and cost - many charge for parking and can be $20/nt.

Once in Nice area, you can visit the hilltowns of St. Paul de Vence, the Maeght Fndtn Museum, head onto Eze, Cape Ferate (sp) to visit the Rothschild Museum, then onto Monaco.

In Nice proper there is the Cours Selaya market in the morning, the Chagall and Matisse Museums in the Ciminez hills of Nice.

Once your friends have departed, you have time to visit Grasse (perfume capital), other hilltowns, backtrack towards Lyon with stop in the Luberon towns, St. Remy, onto Lyon.

It's best you get a Michelin #245 Yellow map - very good; also a guidebook to determine what in the area you would like to see/do. Since you have two full days (Sat & Sun) after the others leave, you'll have to decide your route on return to Lyon and where you want to stay overnight because you cannot return to Nice every nite to sleep. A good place to overnight is St.Remy as it is centrally located; then you have a nite in Lyon before your early morning departure.

This is all doable, but you have to decide what you want to see, what the distances are, how long you're willing to drive any given day, where you'll put your head down in the evenings.

But I can guarantee you will be exhausted by the time you take your seats on your return flight.

Thanks for the info Sandi. We already have our accomodations in Avignon. Won't mind being tired when we head for home so that we can sleep on the plane.

For which night are you booked at Avignon?

You still need hotel in Nice and somewhere in Provence (unless that's the nite in Avignon) and, of course, need hotel in Lyon for nite before departure.

We are booked from Oct. 11th thru the 15th in Avignon. So will need a place in Nice for the 16th Thurs. and then for wherever we decide to stop along the way on our way to Lyon and then for Sunday night in Lyon.

During 5-days in Avignon you can do a lot of touring. You will have a car! Yes? Be sure your hotel provides parking and what they charge as it's difficult to drive within the old walls - too many one-way streets.

But once out of Avignon go West to Nimes and Uzes and stop at Pont du Gard on return shortly before sunset when the tourist buses are gone and the area is beautiful.

North of Avignon is Orange and the vineyards of Chat. du Pape.

Going East are the towns of the Luberon - Gordes, Roussillion, Abbaye de Senaque, Menerbes, La Costa, and others - also Cavillon.

South of Avignon is St. Remy a charming small town with the Asylum where Van Gogh went to "rest" after cutting off his ear and Les Antiques immediately south of St. Remy center and across from there is Glanum - Roman city archeology site.

Further South is Les Baux (mentioned in previous post) and Arles.

Since Aix is the furthest away, about 50 miles from St. Remy suggest you do this on way to Nice for a few hours and lunch.
