Help for Solo Traveler to London
 

Hello!

I will be going by myself to London over a short weekend in May. No husband -- yippee!! I have been to London before, and stayed on Belgrave Road not too far from the Victoria Station stop. I currently have a reservation in the same area at the Best Western Corona (also on Belgrave Road), but really wanted to try the Priceline (name-your-own-price). It intrigues me!

If I do a Priceline search for a hotel in London, what would be a few safe areas for a solo, 35 y.o. woman?

I was thinking of checking Mayfair, Westminster, and Nottinghill. I know Mayfair is great area, but do you think these other areas would be pretty good to wander about in?

And what do you think about Regents Park/Baker Street, Westminster and The City/Tower of London area? Would these other options give me a great base to wander London from?

I would add Kensington to the list as well. Actually there are so many areas to wander. We just got a hotel in Kens for $97 us in mid-May. Happy hunting.

Regents Park and the City would be too far from things most people want to do for me. I'd stick to the three you mentioned and Kensington.

I've never actually used Priceline (though will the next time I go to London), but betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com are often recommended for beginners. Good luck!

Personally I like Bloomsbury-Marble Arch also, but keep in mind you may end up as far north as Camden, which would probably be a problem for some people. The Westminster zone may land you south of the river. I think Regents Park/Baker Street is a little far north, although with the tube you can get anywhere. But I seem to recall some hotels in this zone are at least 7 minutes walk from the tube, and some didn't like the immediate area that much.

Also look at Hotwire and www.betterbidding.com . Particularly as a solo traveler, you may get some good Hotwire deals, with more control over the location.

I wound up getting the Sofitel St. James for $199 a night. It is a five star in the Mayfair area, so I am pretty happy.
