Help for a good inexpensive London Hotel

Looking for a reasonable but clean hotel in London. Victoria and Kensington are OK because I am familiary with those areas. Need something a little quiet if possible. Anyone ever heard of the Garth Hotel or the Academy Hotel on Gower Street, near the British Museum? Comments?

I am in a similar situation, except that this will be my first time spending time in London (I've previously flown in and out of Heathrow, but I've never gotten to do anything more than take a train to King's Cross!).

A hotel that was near the tube lines, under 70 pounds per night (private bathroom is _not_ a neccessity), and within a 30 minute subway ride from the sights of London would be perfect. I'd appreciate any suggestions/tips!

I am going to London in Nov. and am staying at The
Melbourne House on Belgrave Road. (behind Victoria)
For 4 people, it is $144 (american) and that includes breakfast. Good Luck!

Have you already stayed at this hotel before? I too am going in November, but only to spend the night before taking the train down to Cardiff, Wales. Have you spent time in Cardiff to recommend anything. I have not been before. I will be staying with my aunt and uncle in Caerphilly.

I've never been to London. I'm doing something rathersilly on the 11th of September and flying there for the weekend. I'm backpacking for two days, photographing, sketching and writing through English pubs. To this point I've not worried about where I'm going to sleep; I figure I'll find hotels and B&Bs' along the way. People are telling me London is not the place to do this. Any opinion either way? Thanks for any insight you have.
