Help finding somewhere 'nice' to stay for Christmas in Salzburg.
By nice I mean I don't really want to 'blow the bank' but also want somewhere with character and in the old town/ Altstadt area would be a huge bonus.
We are heading to Salzburg for 5 nights over the Christmas period, we are taking our two 20 something daughters and there boyfriends. So we need 3 rooms, we did start looking for apartments but proved too difficult especially as we only wanted 5 nights not 7. And a lot of the B&B/Inn type places close over Christmas. I've got quotes from Auesperg & Goldener Hirsch, with the Auesperg coming in the best but its not in the area we were hoping for, but may be worth the 10-15minute walk to save a few dollars. I'm just wondering if anyone has a suggestion or two from previous experiences? Thanks as always. |
I fyou tell us exactly how much "blow the bank" means (although I think you mean "break the bank") perhpas people can make recos.
(We stayed at a charming hotel directly across the river from the Old Town - originally from the 1880s - but I recall it has changed name. The rooms were large and lovely - as were the views across the river - and rates were modest,) |
thanks!

This is not in the old town, but we stayed last Christmas at the Neuwirtgut - a farm apartment in nearby Anthering.
www.neuwirtgut.at We had the apartment - 2 big rooms with king beds and futon. They also have a double room available. It is a five minute walk from the light rail station. Excellent price. No problem with less than a week - we stayed 5 days - Dec. 22 - 28 |
Several years ago we had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Bristol.

Sounds like a marvelous trip for Christmas! We stayed at the Hotel Elefant (in the middle of the old town) and enjoyed its warmth, ambiance, and character. You may want check out its Web site at http://bestwestern.at/hotels/index_hotel.php?id=26. Also, look at its Trip Advisor reviews and rating.

Hotel Bristol has an amazing breakfast and service is wonderful.

The hotel Elefant is what I was going to recommend.

I've stayed at the Goldener Hirsch and loved it. It is right in the middle of the old town on Getreidegasse. We had a corner room from which you could see the Horse Fountain featured in The Sound of Music (not the one with the Pegasus, which is at Schloss Mirabell). The room was very large and was beautifully furnished in traditional Tyrolean style. Although it was only September, it was very cozy. I'm sure it would be more so at Christmas.

Loved the Goldener Hirsch, the rooms are Heidi-elegant and the food in both restaurants is excellent. Location is perfect.

I am not sure exactly what your budget is but I have three recommendation. The Goldenen Ente and the Weisses Kreuz are in the old town near the cathedral. If you want a charming B&B look at the Am Moos, a short bus ride from the old town.

Checking out all your suggestions. Thanx

We spent two Christmases at the Hotel Wolf-Dietrich, a hotel we had discovered on an earlier visit to Salzburg. It's on the other side of the river, off a delightful pedestrian street called the Linzergasse.... 10-15 minutes to the Old Town. Both years they had a special Christmas Eve dinner for guests. We loved the sound of the church bells at midnight.
The hotel told us we could have a Christmas tree in our room-- just no real candles please! They also helped us make reservations for concerts, and we did go to classical concerts both times on Christmas night. We've always stayed in the main part of the hotel, but there are some rooms in a Residenz across the street. Salzburg is a magical place for Christmas... we hope to be there again this year. http://www.slowphotos.com/photo/show...zburg&cat=3787 Kathy |
