Must be a web site that is efficient. I"m looking for a hotel near 91 Brick Lane. Business attending is in "The Brewery". I've searched all the travel sites I can think of for "hotels near address" and , unfortunately, many do not include this feature for Europe. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance...

The British equivalent of US ZIP codes is a post code with a string of characters -- the first group of letter(s) and number(s) indicates which neighborhood a place is in. If you have the post code for your site, just find it on the following page. It will be from 2 to 4 characters, something like E1, EC4, NW4, or N15. This will at least get you places in roughly the right section of town, then you can use regular mapping services to find out how far they are from your specific destination.

Another way to do it is identify the nearest tube station. Brick Lane is in the east end & runs from about Whitechapel (the Jack the Ripper area) to Shoreditch. This was a dicey area that's been gentrified but there are parts that may still be a bit rough so be careful & check reviews of hotels. Brick Lane (known for it's curry restaurants) is, I think a great area for eating & pubing along with being near the Spitalfield market, but not sure about hotels. I think 91 would be closest to the south end of Brick Lane which would put it near the Aldgate East tube stop. Either try a web search for hotels near Aldgate East tube or, alternatively since I'm not sure there are many hotels in the area, pick one that's on the same tube line(s) which appear to be Hammersmith & city or District. Assuming you mean the Brick lane in the east end - there really aren't many hotels nearby. But the district line goes from Aldgate East all the way along the river and into South Kensington. So you could stay near the Tower, along the Embankment, or even in Victoria or S. Kens and be a straight shot to Brick Lane.

BUT - there are other Brick Lane's in London as well - one in Enfield in far North London, and one in Stanmore in far NW London. Make sure you know which Brick Lane you want.

Look at the following link. Is this The Brewery Conference Center you are talking about -- actually on Chiswell Street which seems to be right by Brick Lane. The link below shows hotels and their locations in relation to The Brewery.

Well - now that we've established we are talking about the Brick Lane in the East End -- if you look at the website Patrick provided you will note none of the recommended hotels are very close to the conference center.

It lists places as far as the Marriotts County Hall and Marble Arch. But it also shows the location of The Brewery is on Chiswell Street which is quite a distance from Brick Lane . . . .

First, the really important issue.

There is a Brewery Conference Centre in Chiswell Street, and by London standards it's miles from Brick Lane (actually about 800 yards as a cockney sparrow flies, but that's still a longish way). But as every fule know, it's the old WHITBREADS brewery.

Brick Lane - the one in E1 that everyone knows - used to house the TRUMANS brewery. Which has now been morphed into a set of "cool" (ouch) bars and packaged office facilities for small businesses. Promoted as "The Old Truman Brewery"

So duckling wants to stay near Brick Lane. Forget about Chiswell Street.

Hotels nearby? There is a place called the City Hotel in Osborne Street. Input its postcode (E1 6TE) into www.multimap.com, then play with the zoom. But the area is a bit of a walk from any kind of public transport, apart from the infrequently-open Shoreditch station on the East London line. Given that you're going to have to do a bit of walking, immediate closeness to the business centre might not be that essential.

The next nearest hotel is probably the Great Eastern at Liverpool Street station. But you're then in The City, where property is so expensive it's seldom wasted on low-rent industries like hotels.

Being a skinflint, and liking the area, I'd stay at the Holiday Inn Express Old Street (marketed as the HIE London City, inaccurately, as it's not in the City of London). Input EC1V 9LN into multimap and zoom.

However, some of the more nervous posters on this board have expressed doubts about the Old Street area. Quite unjustifiably. But the walk from Old Street to Brick Lane of an evening will take you past quite a few gay bars and strip pubs (the respectable face of local jollity), and the less congenial sight of hundreds of bond dealers, investment bankers and other riffraff winding down after a hard day's grinding down the faces of the world's honest businessmen.

I think flanner may have overlooked the fact that the City Hotel is not only with 5 minutes walk of the Truman brewery, it is within 5-10 minutes walk of both of the Aldgate tube stations, and lots of bus routes. I have no idea what it's like inside, but if I recall correctly it has a marble front step, plate glass doors and the usual collection of flags outside, so I imagine it's not a B&B for the homeless. The Great Eastern was re-launched as a posh designer-y sort of place a few years ago, and is by Liverpool St Station about 10 minutes walk away on Bishopsgate, the other side of Spitalfields Market and next to the Broadgate development and all the usual range of City bars etc etc.
